The One Bling To Rule Them All
What do you call a movie about a gangster hobbit?
Brodo Swaggins and the Fellowship of the Bling.
If you’re not a fan of The Lord of The Rings, that prob’ly went over your head.
But get this:
Did you know that Sam Ovens — founder of Consulting.com — played one of the lead characters in the film?
This screenshot will help:
Yes, I photoshopped that sh*t myself.
And yes, I have waaayyyyy too much time on my hands.
But Sam is from New Zealand, the same place where they filmed those movies.
And he does kinda look like a hobbit…
Check this out:
In less than 5 years, Sam Ovens went from a broke 21-year-old living in his parent’s garage to becoming a millionaire living in a Manhattan penthouse.
How did he accomplish such a feat?
One word, two syllables:
According to the man himself, he became a millionaire by teaching other folks the skill sets to launch their own profitable consulting businesses.
Which normally would be easy to dismiss as typical hype from an online guru.
He now claims to be making around $20 million per year and allegedly has a net worth of more than $65 million.
That’s a lot of money. But Sam’s just getting warmed up…
He also boasts of helping over 3,000 people quit their jobs and become full-time consultants with many of them becoming 6-figure earners.
Now hold on a second.
If you’re like me, you’ve heard this song and dance a few too many times.
On the other hand:
Google has a ton of positive Sam Ovens reviews and Consulting.com has testimonials coming out the wazoo.
What makes THIS review different is that I’m not an affiliate for Sammy boy.
With a twist:
Is this just another scam from a guy who sells a consulting course that promises to make you a rich consultant… by creating your own consulting course?
Or is there something more to this Kiwi entrepreneur’s massive popularity?
Let’s leave the Shire and head for Mordor to find out once and for all…
What is Consulting.com?
Consulting.com is an online training company that teaches aspiring entrepreneurs how to launch their own 6-figure businesses.
Founded by Sam Ovens in 2012, the company was originally headquartered in New York City before relocating to El Segundo, California in 2019 (above).
Here’s the deal:
If those numbers are even half accurate, that’s impressive.
(That’s a big IF though.)
And it does beg the question:
What in the name of Sam Ovens are these students being taught to earn so much damn money?
The answer is simple, my Precious:
But what does consulting really mean, anyway?
Give a man a fish, and you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll buy a funny hat. Talk to a hungry man about fish, and you’re a consultant.
~ Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert comic strip
In other words:
The typical definition of a consultant is anyone who gives expert advice in a professional field.
Sam Ovens defines “consulting” a little differently.
According to Sam, consulting includes any type of business-related service ranging from done-for-you client services to selling online coaching programs and everything in between.
So in Mr. Ovens world, that basically includes every type of service-based business under the sun.
His personality seems to resonate with a lot of people and his programs have made quite the splash in the online world.
The important question is:
From your house?
With your mouse?
Well, forget about green eggs and ham…
Cuz here’s the deal with Sam-I-Am:
Who is Sam Ovens?
Before we jump into this:
Do yourself a favor and read this Sam Ovens bio all the way through.
Like him or not, there’s a ton of entrepreneurial gold nuggets you can learn from his story (I sure did).
Sam Ovens was born on August 10th, 1989 in Auckland, New Zealand.
From growing up in a blue-collar, working-class family, he was taught to “keep my head down, live frugally, and pursue the traditional white-collar path of college into a corporate job.”
And he did just that.
While attending college, he got an internship at Vodafone in an air-conditioned office and felt like he’d made it as a 21-year-old success story.
(Ovens actual desk at Vodafone.)
But then it happened:
It was owned by a super-wealthy businessman and the island had every luxury you can imagine, including priceless statues and even a helicopter pad.
(The real island Sam visited.)
Over the course of two days:
Just like that, Sam’s definition of success was forever changed.
Then he made a decision that would impact the rest of his life:
Ovens dumped his girlfriend and started dating the wealthy businessman’s smokin’ hot daughter.
Kidding. That’s actually Sam and his beautiful wife Ashleigh.
Here’s what really happened:
When Sam returned from his life-changing island trip, he knew enough of the normal 9-to-5 lifestyle to know it wasn’t for him anymore.
He soon dropped out of college, quit his job at Vodafone, sold his car, and moved into his parent’s garage to pursue entrepreneurship full-time.
(Yep, that’s the real garage.)
The only problem?
Like most of us in the beginning, he had no idea what to do next.
But like all successful entrepreneurs before him, Sam got started anyway.
After a year of hard work and blowing through $15,000 of savings and borrowed money, the online job board had produced zero revenue.
Nobody cared or wanted any part of it.
Even though it was a spectacular failure, Sam dusted himself off and went from the job board — back to the drawing board.
Then he came up with another business idea called ToTheDesk…
A service that would deliver high-quality meals from local restaurants to office workers so they could save time during lunch breaks while avoiding fast food.
(This was pre-DoorDash or Uber Eats.)
At this point, his family and friends started to tell him to give up.
But my man Sam wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
He found a mentorship group online who encouraged him to take a closer look at his failed business attempts and see what he could learn from them.
Then it hit him:
Instead of just guessing what he thought people would want to buy, Sam decided to make a critical change and began doing market research to find out what small businesses actually needed.
So in 2012 and with no product to sell:
Ovens started contacting business owners to find out what their biggest struggles were.
Posing as a college student doing research, Sam conducted dozens of interviews with property management companies and eventually discovered a huge pain point they all shared with daily reporting practices.
He wasn’t sure if the concept would work, but Sam started brainstorming a piece of software that could solve their reporting problems once and for all.
And guess what?
Third time’s a charm:
After countless emails, phone calls and coffee meetings, he managed to get funding from several businesses to build the software he named SnapInspect.
Once completed, Sam already had a few customers ready to go and finally got to experience the sweet smell of victory for the first time.
But here’s the interesting part:
During the time Sam was running his software biz, he started a digital marketing agency (SEO, web design) on the side to fund his struggling startup.
After all, he’d learned a ton of valuable marketing skills along the way, so why not generate some cashflow by helping out small service businesses?
Sam figured he had nothing to lose, so he began doing Skype calls with his buddy and taught him everything he knew.
Soon after, his friend landed a $10,000 client.
Realizing he might be onto something, Ovens placed all the Skype recordings in a Dropbox folder and offered to share them with his mentorship group.
Before he knew it, Sam had 12 people requesting access to the Dropbox folder for $1000 a pop.
That’s when he had another epiphany:
Ovens looked at the numbers and realized that his software company was actually far less profitable than his new training and consulting business.
The rest is history.
Sam Ovens Consulting Journey
- 2011 – Broke, depressed and living in a garage
- 2012 – Launches SnapInspect, buys SamOvens.com, makes $100k
- 2013 – Sells SnapInspect and goes all-in with consulting (makes $500k)
- 2014 – Grows his successful consulting business to $1.2 million
- 2015 – Doubles his consulting revenue to $2.4 million, moves to NYC
- 2016 – Purchases Consulting.com and generates $18 million in revenue
- 2017 – Forbes 30 Under 30 list and claims net worth of $65 million
- 2018 – Consulting.com generates $2.5 million per month ($30M/year)
- 2019 – Sam moves to California to set up new company headquarters
- 2020 – Starts surfing, smokes weed all day, becomes a vegan (kidding)
As you can see above:
Once Sam discovered the power of consulting, he never looked back.
In just a few years, he went from making $100k in 2012 to earning millions of dollars that allowed him to move into a Manhattan penthouse in 2015.
By the end of 2016:
Ovens had purchased the domain Consulting.com for more than $300k and his business surpassed 8-figures in annual revenue for the first time.
He now lives and operates his business in El Segundo, California (near LA).
Now, I know what you might be thinking:
“Sounds like BS and what the hell is this guy selling to make so much cash?”
Believe it not, it’s mostly from one product:
Consulting Accelerator (more about that below).
Regardless of the numbers though, it’s clear that Sam Ovens knows how to build and scale online businesses.
But what exactly is he teaching in his programs?
And what makes them any different from all the get-rich-quick crap out there?
Time to go off, my friend.
Off the Richter scale, that is:
What are Sam Ovens Courses?
Sam Ovens Consulting.com offers 3 tiers of educational programs:
- Consulting Accelerator (for beginner entrepreneurs)
- Uplevel Consulting (for business owners looking to automate and scale)
- Quantum Mastermind (for successful business owners looking to be #1)
First off, let’s talk about his biggest money-maker…
Consulting Accelerator Review
Sam Ovens Consulting Accelerator course is his flagship training program that teaches beginners how to go from zero to hero as a consultant in 6 weeks.
According to Consulting.com, the program is for “anyone who wants to start their own business and grow it to 6-figures.”
BONUS: Realistic Passive Income for Smart People (FREE Guide) >>
Let’s dive in:
The complete Accelerator program includes lifetime access to over 100 hours of online instructional videos, tools, Q&A calls, and a private Facebook group.
Here’s the thing:
I highly doubt many folks will actually use the workbooks and read through a thousand pages (yes, 1000) of bone-dry content about business and consulting.
But it’s a nice touch for those weirdos who prefer to learn offline and don’t mind killing a few trees.
(Settle down weirdos, it’s just a joke.)
In any case, let’s break down the Consulting Accelerator program step-by-step:
Week One – Fundamentals and Foundations
Your first week of training includes 8 modules on consulting fundamentals, ranging from picking your niche and how to find opportunities in the market, to creating and pricing your offer and refining your marketing message.
Week Two – New Paradigm & World View
Week Two has 8 modules on improving your entrepreneurial mindset by shattering limiting beliefs and letting go of fear. Be prepared to go deep here. E.g. Check out one of Sam’s Week 2 videos called “Face off with the devil”:
Week Three – Alchemy of Client Conversion
Week Three consists of 6 modules on how to convert a prospect on a phone call into a paying client. Includes everything you need to structure the perfect sales call and handle objections using Sam’s battle-tested sales script.
Week Four – Alchemy of Client Attraction
Week Four includes 8 modules on what you need to know about attracting your first high value clients, from organic outreach (e.g. lumpy mail) to paid attraction methods (e.g. FB ads) and how to set up your own webinar funnel.
Week Five – Fractal Facebook Evolution
Week Five’s 14 modules goes into the nitty-gritty of exactly how to use Facebook advertising to find new clients where no one else is looking. Includes how to use Facebook’s algorithm to launch and manage a successful campaign.
Week Six – Minimum Viable Service Delivery
Week Six has 8 modules on how to deliver jaw-dropping results to your clients while maintaining high profit margins. From dissecting your offer and service delivery components, to managing client expectations and creating workflows.
But wait, there’s more!
Suffice it to say:
With 52 modules and 105 hours of course work to go through, Consulting Accelerator is an extremely detailed program that’ll keep you busy.
It also comes with a 10k+ Facebook community and weekly live Q&A calls.
If you manage to complete the course, the whole idea is to have an automated funnel designed to bring in high value clients looking for consulting services.
If not, at least you’ll have some pretty fancy paperweights.
How Much Does Consulting Accelerator Cost?
Consulting Accelerator costs one payment of $1,997 or 5 payments of $597 ($2,985).
Or, if you sign up through an affiliate’s discount link (not mine), you’ll get $500 off the regular price which reduces it down to $1,497 or 5 payments of $497.
So if you pay it all up front, you’ll save $988 (or $1,488 if you use the discount) and the program also comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
But there’s a catch:
I contacted Sam Ovens support team and they told me it’s an action-based refund which requires you to complete and submit the first 2 weeks of worksheets and action items during your first 14 days in the program.
So if you’re just looking to try out Consulting Accelerator with no questions asked, I suggest you take advantage of their free 7-day trial option which gives you limited free access to certain modules of the course.
If you don’t like it, you can just click a button to cancel within 7 days and won’t get charged a penny.
Uplevel Consulting Review
Sam Ovens Uplevel Consulting course is his intermediate training program for established business owners looking to systematize and scale to 7-figures.
According to Consulting.com, the 9-week course teaches how to achieve that by using “predictable systems, automation, lean team and PPC ads.”
Here’s how the course breaks down:
Week One – Mapping Your MVC (6 modules on the fundamentals of building and mapping out a new model of consulting with a Minimum Viable Course)
Week Two – Sell Before Build (6 modules on why it’s mandatory to sell your course before building it, how to convert complete strangers into clients, scientific selling, social media setup including LinkedIn and your FB profile)
Week Three – Building Version One (5 modules on the anatomy of a program, how to build version one of your course, systems thinking, creating the content and customer community)
Week Four – 6 Rapid Promo Strategies (4 modules on 6 ways of attracting your first clients in your target market by using paid and organic attraction methods)
Week Five – Three Proven Conversion Funnels (7 modules on how to use the VSL funnel, JIT funnel, and 2KA funnels with your automation gameplan)
Week Six – Facebook Ads Unleashed (10 modules on how to come up with your Facebook ad hypothesis, target audience hypothesis, and instructions on how to use FB ads with your three proven funnels and daily workflow process)
Week Seven – Developing Your 8-Figure Mindset (5 modules on how to take your mindset to the next level and grow into your new high-performance self)
Week Eight – Hiring Your All-Star Team (9 modules on the ABC’s of building a real company, brand, and culture and how to hire all levels of employees)
Week Nine – Building The Ultimate Course (7 modules on how to improve your program, knowing when it’s time to rebuild, principles of design)
Long story short:
In a nutshell:
Sam’s entire method is based on teaching you how to use Facebook ads to drive traffic into a funnel which attracts consulting clients, and then help them get results using a course so you don’t have to do anything one-on-one.
In effect, you’re removing yourself from your own consulting business to achieve “Consulting Nirvana”.
How Much Does Uplevel Consulting Cost
Uplevel Consulting is a high-ticket program with a price tag of $5,800.
I had to do some digging to find out the cost since Mr. Ovens doesn’t advertise it anywhere on his website.
And you can’t just buy Uplevel Consulting, you first need to apply for a call with a sales rep by answering a questionnaire.
Quantum Mastermind Review
Sam Ovens Quantum Mastermind program is his advanced course for successful business owners looking to scale up and dominate their market.
You might even say… make a quantum leap in their business.
According to Sam, he wanted to create an elite community of entrepreneurs and “a place to share our ninja-level shit” on a much deeper level.
One thing’s for sure:
Quantum Mastermind definitely comes with a ninja-level price tag…
How Much Does Quantum Mastermind Cost?
Quantum Mastermind has an annual fee of $36,000.
Just so you know, this price is almost impossible to find anywhere online.
But luckily for you… I have ninja-level research skills 😉
Watch Sam Ovens explain how it all works below:
For $36k per year, Quantum Mastermind will provide you with…
- Three 3-day live events held at Sam’s office in LA every four months
- Access to the Quantum Mastermind online portal which includes all previous event recordings (HD video and MP3 audio)
- Access to all of Sam’s programs including Consulting Accelerator, Uplevel Consulting, and Quantum Mastermind training videos
- Membership to a private Facebook group for Quantum members only
- Contact information of other Quantum members (7 or 8-figure earners)
- Weekly Q&A calls along with the ability to ask Sam questions directly
- Ninja tips and updates on everything from new business strategies and processes, to mental reprogramming and optimal behavior patterns
Sam claims they’re going to limit Quantum Mastermind to 100 members only.
Because it’s easier to maintain a high-performance learning environment by keeping the entrepreneur community smaller and more engaged.
And let’s not forget one little detail:
I’m sure the cost of membership is worth every penny for some folks.
For example, here’s a live Quantum Mastermind session with Sam:
I gotta admit the man knows his sh*t.
But it’s safe to say that Quantum is definitely NOT for rookie entrepreneurs who still think Shark Tank is the best TV show on the planet.
Pros: Are Sam Ovens Courses Worth It?
✓ Sam Ovens is a brilliant entrepreneur.
Whether you believe his revenue numbers or not, Sam Ovens has gained some undeniable wisdom over the years.
For example, check out what he has to say about the power of discipline:
If you watched the video above (and didn’t fall asleep), it should be clear how differently Sam thinks compared to most online gurus out there.
He also has a knack for reducing complex ideas into simple actionable steps.
After studying his material and watching his YouTube channel for literally years now, I can honestly say the man knows what he’s talking about when it comes to building and running a successful online business.
✓ Incredibly detailed information.
In terms of the amount of sheer content, you’ll get your money’s worth here.
That’s over 4 days of video content if you played it non-stop.
Not to mention the 1000 pages of material in the workbooks and the 10,000+ member Facebook community.
So if you’re an entrepreneur thirsting for knowledge, be prepared to get blasted in the face by Sam Ovens fire hydrant.
✓ Consulting is a legit business model.
It’s no secret that people are more skeptical than ever when it comes to making money online.
And they should be.
But how can you tell the dapper from the crapper?
Flip a coin.
But seriously, the only way to really find out is by doing your research — just like you’re doing right now (good job, high five).
Here’s the good news:
According to Forbes, “consulting” (aka doing 1-on-1 coaching or building an e-learning course as Sam Ovens defines it) is a $200 billion-dollar industry — predicted to reach $325 billion by 2025.
That’s a chunka change.
And if you want to learn that skill?
You could do much, MUCH worse than Sam Ovens courses.
✓ Thousands of reviews.
No doubt about it:
Social proof is one of the most important factors in marketing.
It’s the reason why you see before-and-after pics in weight loss ads.
And it’s the same reason why Sam Ovens claims to have over 3,500 positive customer reviews on his testimonial page.
Now, I sure as hell didn’t count all of them but there’s definitely a lot of videos that would convince even the hardest of skeptics that Sam is the real deal.
Why else would so many people take the time to film a video for him?
He’s gotta be legit, right?
I do believe that many of his testimonials are from genuinely enthusiastic customers, but some are a little too good to be true (more about that later).
✓ Free trial and money-back guarantee.
This is perhaps the biggest pro about the Consulting Accelerator course.
You can do a limited test-drive for 7 days before deciding to purchase and it comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
So if wanna try it out and decide it’s not for you, simply press cancel within a week and you’re good to go.
If you decide to pull the trigger and buy the full course, you’ll have 2 weeks to go through it and still get your money back if you change your mind.
But if you read the fine print, there’s a couple catches you need to be aware of that we’ll get into next.
Cons: Is Sam Ovens a Scam?
✗ Sam Ovens is not for everyone.
Reality check time:
- If you don’t enjoy learning about philosophy, psychology, or woo-woo?
Sam Ovens is not for you.
- If you don’t have an existing business or specialized knowledge or skills?
Sam Ovens is not for you.
- If you don’t like sales or getting on the phone?
Sam Ovens is not for you.
- If you don’t have the patience to spend a year building a consulting biz?
Sam Ovens is not for you.
Just like art or music, Sam’s style of teaching is also an acquired taste.
To some, he’s an enlightened business guru who possesses the mystical secrets of business and entrepreneurship.
It’s not just his New Zealand accent, he kinda reminds me of a lifelike robot that’s been programmed with all the right answers but no sense of humor.
And his eyes tend to look like he just snorted a fat rail of coke.
But then again:
Some might say I look like a tattooed douchebag who sells fat rails of coke.
So you can’t always judge a book by its cover.
✗ Information overload.
When it comes to Sam Ovens training courses… there’s quite a bit of material.
There’s a sh*tload of detailed information on everything from mindset and the fundamentals of business, to how to set up landing pages and Facebook ads.
Frankly, there’s almost too much information.
I guess it depends on what you’re looking for.
If you want a ridiculously comprehensive program that includes 100+ hours of training on the laws of nature, man, the human mind as “an evolutionary algorithm” and the science behind everything…
Professor Ovens is your guy.
But if you’re the type of person who just wants the need-to-know?
Sam’s meticulous breakdown of Every. Little. Detail. might drive you insane.
You’ve been warned.
✗ Free trial and money-back guarantee… to a degree.
Just in case you couldn’t tell by now, Sam Ovens is a smart motherf*cker.
(Or if that’s too vulgar for you, he’s sharp as a f*cking tack.)
In any case:
Another “tack-tic” used by savvy marketers like Sam is known as “moving the free line”.
Think about it.
If you’re blown away by what you’re getting for FREE, you can’t help but wonder:
“What’s behind door #2 if I actually pay for this? It must be even better!”
And Sam Ovens is very aware of that fact.
That’s why he gives away some of his best content in a free 7-day trial.
And he does offer a 14-day money-back guarantee — but there’s a catch:
In other words, you can’t just change your mind after looking at a few videos and get a refund.
Which I think is reasonable but it’s also a tad misleading since Sam doesn’t really explain that in his webinar or anywhere on the Consulting.com website.
Speaking of which…
✗ Not all Sam Ovens reviews are rosy.
Here’s the thing:
Sam fully admits he used to personally “interview one of his customers” (aka record a video testimonial) at the beginning of every single work day.
More recently, his assistant has been conducting the interviews for him.
Can’t blame the guy.
I mean, Sam teaches you how to ask for referrals in his training videos.
For example, here’s an excerpt from a comment I found during my research:
“… Then Sam sent me MANY emails promising an upgrade to a course that I could qualify for, merely by sending him a video about my experience.”
Let’s just call it an ethical bribe.
And he does have an affiliate program for anyone who purchases one of his courses, in which he’ll allow them to sell his program for a $500 commission.
Still, the overwhelming amount of positive reviews is impressive.
Most of the complaints have to do with misleading claims, difficulty getting refunds, and arguing whether Sam’s a scam or not.
While that’s a typical accusation from online trolls, there are some red flags that indicate not all of Sam’s 3000+ testimonials are exactly genuine.
Here’s the best YouTube review I could find that explains this point:
Sam Ovens: Quick Summary
|Sam Ovens is a very smart and successful entrepreneur who has a knack for reducing complex ideas into simple actionable steps.||Sam Ovens teaching style (super-analytical and philosophical) can come across as condescending and his New Zealand accent can throw some people off.|
|Both his Consulting Accelerator and Uplevel Consulting courses have over 100 hours of detailed content on how to build a consulting biz from scratch.||Both of Sam Ovens courses are ridiculously comprehensive which can cause major information overload for those who just want the need-to-know.|
|Consulting Accelerator comes with a 7-day free trial option and a 14-day money-back guarantee if you decide to purchase the full program.||The 7-day free trial option is limited to specific content only (not the whole course) and the money-back guarantee requires proof of you taking action.|
|Consulting (e.g. 1-on-1 coaching or building an e-course) is a legit business model which is predicted to reach $325 billion by 2025.||Consulting (done the Sam Ovens way) requires a ton of phone sales calls and mastering Facebook ads which can cost a small fortune.|
|Consulting.com has more than 3,500 positive customer reviews and Sam Ovens has hundreds more on his YouTube channel.||Not all of Sam Ovens reviews are natural – some are from paid affiliates or folks who were asked for a review in exchange for a free upgrade.|
Bottom Line: Is Sam Ovens Really Legit?
He’s definitely NOT a complete fraud or scammer if that’s what you mean.
I’ve been following the guy for years and his business IQ is off the charts.
For example, watch Sam talk about “Death By 1,000 Cuts”:
If you made it through that 27-minute video, I’m sure you’ll agree that Ovens isn’t just… half-baked.
(See what I did there?)
Speaking of big numbers:
- Is Sam Ovens really worth $65 million as he claims? Impossible to verify but it’s fair to say he’s a multimillionaire.
- Does his Consulting.com business actually do 20 million+ per year? Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised. Check out the FB post below showing Sam’s Stripe account from 2018 (nearly $2 million in monthly revenue).
- Are all of his 3,000+ video testimonials legit? I doubt it but I’m sure a bunch are genuine.
Here’s the thing:
The real question is:
Can Sam Ovens make YOU successful if you invest in his programs?
It completely depends on how much time and work you’re willing to put in.
But despite containing hundreds of hours of training material, Sam Ovens courses don’t actually give you any specialized consulting knowledge.
Which means that if you don’t have any experience or special skills… you have a LONG road ahead of you.
Yes, Sam will help you choose a niche but you still have to become somewhat of an expert in the field if you want to deliver quality results to your clients.
How do you do that?
Just pretend to know what you’re doing and use a free trial to lure ’em in.
But you’re gonna need to do some serious research and figure out how to solve a big problem that your market is having.
You then need to figure out how to deliver your service, master Facebook ads, and be willing to make a *LOT* of sales calls.
That may sound simple but make no mistake:
If you’re okay with that, Sam Ovens might be the perfect fit.
If he’s not your cup of tea?
Maybe you should look elsewhere.
Which leads us to my…
