Who The F*CK is Keala Kanae?
You’re not exactly thrilled with the idea of showing up at an office all day, err’day for the rest of your life.
Terrifies the living sh*t outta you, right?
And if you’re like more than 30 million other peeps, you might’ve seen this guy on YouTube:
And if you’re like ME, at this point you prob’ly wanna punch him in the face.
Cuz if I have to hear the words “Kah-la Kah-nai” one more f*ckin time…
I’m gonna go AWOL on my iMac.
But I digress.
Is Keala Kanae The Real Deal?
Well, yes and no.
Yeah, he’s a real guy.
But what you see in that video above is a promo for his infamous AWOL Academy.
What it promises you is the chance to make tons of money while working from home.
Maybe even live in a Hawaiian mansion with a big spiral staircase.
But the million-dollar question is:
How will you achieve this wonderous goal?
By learning how to sell tons of pineapple-flavored meth online.
But is it just me or do you wanna say “Koala” every time you see “Keala”?
In any case, you’ll actually be taught how to make money through the magic of affiliate marketing.

There’s a good reason why it’s so easy to watch Keala and imagine yourself enjoying his relaxed and successful lifestyle.
Thanks to those lucrative skills, he’s also enjoyed a ton of success with his AWOL Academy.
According to Inc.com, AWOL is generating annual revenues in the $20 million to $50 million range.
But WTF does “AWOL” mean, anyway?
- Amassing Wealth Over Landlines?
- Annoying Webinars On Line?
Wait, how ’bout:
- Angry Wombat Opens Lips
Sadly, wrong on all counts.
Truth be told, in military terms AWOL means “Absent Without Official Leave” and is used to describe someone who leaves their post without permission.
But in AWOL Academy, it stands for “Another Way Of Life”.
Sounds sexy, but can they actually deliver?
Let’s get into it.
What is AWOL Academy?
First off, some basics:
AWOL Academy is an online training program that teaches people how to start an affiliate marketing business.
According to their official website, they’re also:
If you’re really green, affiliate marketing simply means that you get paid a commission to promote and sell other people’s products.
Some of the most popular affiliate programs in the world are Amazon Associates, eBay Partners, and Shopify’s Affiliate Program.
All you gotta do is advertise and collect your cut.
Their headquarters is located in Las Vegas, NV, which makes perfect sense because let’s face it:
Starting an online business is a gamble.
One that can definitely be worth it, but you better know what you’re doing if you don’t wanna lose your shirt.
And that’s where AWOL comes in:
The Academy apparently even offers advanced training such as strategic tax planning and investing.
And of course, they also have their own affiliate program which allows you to make money from selling AWOL’s training products.
But to get the true flavor of what AWOL Academy is all about, it helps to know where and how they got started in the first place.
How AWOL Got Started…
Do you like onions?
Not a huge fan myself.
But the history of AWOL is just like one of those eye-watering bastards with a few layers you gotta peel through.
But to fully understand how that happened, we gotta peel back another layer.
Thirteen years of layers, actually.
Stay with me now…
See, Keala Kanae was the first one in his family to graduate college.
He attended the University of Hawaii and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
And then reality hit him like a truck.
Upon graduating, he quickly discovered that his education basically added up to a lotta debt and low-paying entry jobs.
Not to mention a sh*tload of disappointment and disillusion.
But the fun didn’t stop there.
While slumped in the hallway of his mother’s house and sick and tired of being broke and making excuses all the time, Keala made a decision.
One that would change the course of his life forever…
He finally caved and signed up with Amway.
He actually began seeking out anything and everything he could find about the wonderful world of internet marketing.
Specifically, Keala began talking to anyone and everyone who could help him master the affiliate marketing game.
It wasn’t all roses but after years of trial and error, his hard work finally paid off and Keala Kanae eventually hit six figures online.
But little did he know what was about to happen next…
Who is Kameron George?
Kameron George had been a construction worker in a previous life.
The backbreaking work and endless 12-hour shifts had sparked his interest in digital entrepreneurship and his search for another way of life.
And guess what?
Just like Keala, Kameron became obsessed with internet marketing and by age 22, he was already running a successful online business while living his dream lifestyle in Thailand.
This was Kameron’s flagship group within the now-defunct MLM company called Empower Network.
Back in 2013, Project AWOL had a falling out with Empower who claimed that the group was violating their terms of service and affiliate policies.
After the dust had settled, Kameron George ultimately parted ways with Empower Network and decided to venture out on his own.
And then it happened:
That’s when Kameron was introduced to Keala Kanae.
It was a bromance right from the start.
The two online entrepreneurs actually met by accident but immediately hit it off due to their similar backgrounds and life philosophies.
Elite Push was one of their first online ventures together, but it was essentially the early beginnings of AWOL Academy.
In fact, you can clearly see below that Kameron advertised Elite Push in the exact same mansion Keala used in the video for AWOL at the top of this page.
The brand name Elite Push has since been discontinued because they basically merged it with AWOL Academy.
But Keala and Kameron also worked together on Global Affiliate Zone, another affiliate marketing program that’s very similar to AWOL.
But their actual game plan was to create the greatest internet/affiliate marketing program of its kind.
Did they accomplish that?
Let’s find out.
How Much is AWOL Academy?
I know what you’re thinking:
“Just tell me the damn price so I can go watch some Netflix!”
Well, the answer is… not that simple.
AWOL Academy is jam-packed with everything you need to know about how to become a successful affiliate marketer.
Now, here’s the thing:
As long as what they’re teaching is legit and actually helps you become successful online, part of me says: who gives a sh*t?
I’m reminded of Joe Pesci’s infamous words from Casino, one of the greatest movies of all-time (modified for internet marketing):
You gotta know that a guy who teaches you how to sell digital products, even if you take care of him real well, I mean, he’s gonna try to sell you more products. Makes sense, don’t it? Right?
~ Nicky Santoro, Casino
Get the point?
So, you can’t really blame the AWOL boys for trying to upsell you more programs — it’s the nature of the business.
The real question is:
Do the programs actually work? And are they worth your money?
Let’s take a look.
Internet Income Explained | “Learn The Basics Of Internet Marketing” | $49
For true beginners, $49 will buy you the Internet Income Explained mini-course.
This is a foundational training program designed to introduce new online entrepreneurs to the business of internet marketing.
A short 4-module video program gives you the basics:
- Introduction to online marketing and digital sales
- Overview of Kameron and Keala’s business philosophies and strategies
- How to get started with their fast track formula and scale your online biz
I could be wrong but:
In any case, Internet Income Explained is an introductory program that’s basically designed to get you into the AWOL Academy funnel.
Pro Academy | “Become a Pro Internet Marketer” | $99
Developed with the “newbie” in mind, AWOL’s flagship course is their $99 Pro Academy.
Consisting of 5 modules — each with 5 videos — the Pro Academy guides you step by step through the process of…
Ready for this?
Building your very own affiliate marketing Death Star.
Equipped with a fully armed and automated sales funnel.
Topics covered include:
- Module 1: Affiliate marketing overview and fundamental concepts of paid advertising and online sales funnels
- Module 2: How to set up your landing page and email autoresponder, the importance of tracking and split testing
- Module 3: Where and how to find affiliate products to sell, how to generate traffic using solo advertising
- Module 4: The importance of email marketing and tracking, how to set your advertising budget and maximize profits, realistic expectations in your first year of affiliate marketing
Everything from how to choose your products, set up and track your first sales funnel, and generate some initial traffic is explained in depth.
It’s worth noting that while the Pro Academy course only costs $99, you’ll still have to pay for some necessary software if you wanna set up your first funnel the way Keala explains.
For all the software listed above, you’re looking at around $50-$75/mo.
But don’t forget you also gotta pay for solo ads to drive some traffic to your offers, which will cost you at least $50-$100 to get some decent clicks.
So all told, your startup cost will be closer to the $200-$250 range.
The Pro Academy course also comes with a “deep dive” questionnaire and 1-on-1 phone call in addition to the training.
On the upside, this kind of personal attention is a pretty nice get for only $99.
Still, for a rank beginner who knows nothing about affiliate marketing, Pro Academy looks like a good starting point.
Inbox Academy | “Start Making Every Email You Send More Effective” | $447
Once you’re ready to go beyond the basics, the next level up is the Inbox Academy for $447.
This training course is designed to teach you how to maximize your email marketing to increase open rates and clicks.
- Module 1: The Basics
- Module 2: Email Deliverability
- Module 3: Open Rates
- Module 4: Click-Thru Rates
They claim that you’ll discover the “secret strategies used by the best email marketers” to help boost your open rates and convince subscribers to buy your affiliate offers.
Thanks to the rise of social media and influencer marketing — email marketing is definitely underrated these days.
Conversion Academy | “Struggling To Convert Your Leads Into New Customers?” | $1,797
Online traffic and attention is only effective if you can actually monetize it.
In other words, if you have potential customers on your site or email list, how do you convert those leads into paying customers?
This 6-module program tells you how to boost your sales funnel conversions through:
- Module 1: Epic Story Telling
- Module 2: Mind Control Hacks
- Module 3: Live Sales Formula
- Module 4: Evergreen Sales Formula
- Module 5: High Ticket Sales
- Module 6: Affiliate Tracking
From storytelling to basic mind control and hypnotic language, they seem to cover a wide range of advanced sales and persuasion techniques.
And it looks like they’re droppin’ some valuable pearls in this course.
Traffic Academy | “Got a High Converting Sales Funnel and Just Need More Leads?” | $2,997
The best conversion strategies in the world are only useful if you have the leads to convert in the first place.
That’s why next up you’ll be offered the nearly $3k Traffic Academy.
This 5-module video series claims to help you get “high-converting, laser-targeted traffic that’s ready to buy right now.”
Here’s what you’ll get access to:
- Module 1: FB Traffic Academy
- Module 2: YouTube Traffic Formula
- Module 3: Instagram Traffic Formula
- Module 4: Bing/Yahoo Traffic
- Module 5: CPA Traffic Formula
Look: I’m not a paid ads guy (SEO is my bread ‘n butta).
But this course looks solid enough and obviously Keala and Kameron know a thing or two about leveraging paid traffic.
Masters Academy | “Masters Create Their Own Success” | $5,497
This is where things start to get a lil’ pricier.
Presumably, once you’re at this level you should already have a successful affiliate marketing business up and running.
This course from the AWOL crew brings you advice from “some of the world’s greatest minds” on everything from money management and investing, to strategic tax planning and developing a high-level mindset for wealth.
- Section 1: Mindset Hacks
- Section 2: Wealth Strategies
- Section 3: Solopreneur to CEO
Plus many more to come in the future (allegedly).
Those who will benefit most from this course are probably more advanced online entrepreneurs who are looking to get to the next level.
AWOL Elite Mastermind | “Building, Growing, and Scaling Online Businesses” | $14,997 to $17,997/yr
Finally, we have the AWOL Elite Mastermind program for a whopping $15k-$18k per year (as of this writing).
While they don’t list this program on their official products page, apparently this course is:
… reserved for our most serious clients who know that Building, Growing, and Scaling Online Businesses is the key to creating a lifestyle by their own design. It’s for the Wise Marketer that understands the value of peaking behind the curtain.
From what I can tell:
According to their affiliate page, AWOL Elite also includes a ticket to their “Awaken” and/or “Elite Summit” live events which are:
… a cumulation of knowledge and experts in both the business industry and personal development industry… where skillset and mindset meet.
Here’s the interesting part:
AWOL Elite used to be priced at $9,997.
It’s also offered for a discounted price of $14,997 for those who take action within 10 days of their coaching call.
(Or if you use the AWOL Elite order page here.)
That said, I’m gonna assume that AWOL Elite includes the following:
- Internet Income Explained ($49)
- Pro Academy ($99)
- Inbox Academy ($447)
- Conversion Academy ($1,797)
- Traffic Academy ($2,997)
- Masters Academy ($5,497)
But check this out:
According to my sh*tty math skills, if you add all those prices up… it comes to a princely sum of $10,886.
Which is $7k less than the normal price of $17,997.
Hey, nobody said mentorship was cheap.
And quite frankly, it could be worth the price of admission IF:
You’re absolutely crushing it with your affiliate marketing business, and just want personal access to the AWOL founders themselves.
After all, if you’re at the point in your business where one or two little tweaks could mean an extra $5k/mo in your jeans — then why the hell not?
But if you’re a rank beginner, this prob’ly shouldn’t be your starting point, Broski.
AWAKEN Live Experience | “Become an Unstoppable Force of Nature…” | $597
- 3-day live event held in Las Vegas, NV
- Designed to help you break free of your limiting beliefs and transform you into an unstoppable digital entrepreneur

AWOL Elite Summit | “The World’s Greatest Internet Marketing Training” | Free*

- 20+ speakers helped motivate, inspire, and educate attendees how to master their affiliate marketing businesses and take it to new heights

- Not being held in 2019
AWOL Academy Affiliate Program | $39.95/mo
It’s only natural for a company who’s teaching you how to be a successful affiliate marketer, to have their own affiliate program as well.
To sign up to be an AWOL affiliate, it’ll cost you a reasonable $40 per month.
Here’s how the commission structure breaks down for each AWOL product:
AWOL Affiliate Program
|Pro Academy||$99||60% per sale|
|AWOL Community||$49.95||30% per sale|
|Inbox Academy||$447||30% per sale|
|Conversion Academy||$1,797||30% per sale|
|Traffic Academy||$2,997||30% per sale|
|Masters Academy||$5,497||30% per sale|
|AWOL Elite Lite||$11,997/yr||30% per sale|
|AWOL Elite Mastermind||$14,997/yr||30% per sale|
They also have a 2nd tier affiliate program, which basically allows you to recruit other AWOL affiliates and receive a 5% commission override on their sales.
I’ve already talked about the AWOL Elite Mastermind program, but specifically I’m referring to:
- AWOL Community ($49.95 per month | 30% Commission)
Gives purchaser access to our Facebook groups to stay in touch, ask questions, get help, and everything else Facebook groups are used for.
And there’s also:
- AWOL Elite Lite ($11,997 per year | 30% Commission)
Which includes access to an:
… ongoing mentoring and training program which entitles customers to 1 year of weekly training webinars wherein they can bring their entire sales funnel including ALL ads, landing pages, checkout pages, upsell pages, downsell pages, etc along with all of their data and analytics and we help interpret that data into actionable items they can do to either get the campaign into profit or draw more profit from it.
So, this is where things get a lil’ confusing.
My best guess is that AWOL Elite Lite is either no longer being offered, or it’s AWOL Elite without the free tickets to their live mastermind events.
Whatever the case may be, we’re not done yet.
Their affiliate page also shows “Product Bundles” which they claim make up about 90% of backend sales.
Once again, the prices differ on their affiliate and order pages but here’s what they include:
AWOL Affiliate Product Bundles
|Build Bundle||• Pro Academy|
• Inbox Academy
|$397–$546||30% per sale|
|Optimize Bundle||• Pro Academy|
• Inbox Academy
• Conv. Academy
|$1,797–$2,343||30% per sale|
|Scale Bundle||• Pro Academy|
• Inbox Academy
• Conv. Academy
• Traffic Academy
|$3,997–$5,340||30% per sale|
|Masters Bundle||• Pro Academy|
• Inbox Academy
• Conv. Academy
• Traffic Academy
• Masters Academy
|$10,837–$11,997||30% per sale|
|Elite Bundle||• All AWOL Products||$14,997–$17,997||30% per sale|
How many AWOL affiliates are there?
According to Keala, back in 2017 they had around 12,000 AWOL members, and only about 300 of those members were AWOL affiliates.
Which is only about 3% of all AWOL members.
Now that was a couple years ago, so their membership has probably grown significantly since then, as well as the number of affiliates they have.
That said, you should check out their income disclaimer I found on one of their event pages below:
BIG FAT INCOME DISCLAIMER: The results of the experts listed on this page are as far from typical as you can get. It’s no secret that fewer than 3% of people who attend these events or buy online courses ever succeed – the reasons for which just might be one of life’s greatest mysteries.
So, if you’re hoping to get rich using the strategies you will learn at this event, the odds are heavily stacked against you. Success in anything takes hard work, dedication, and skill and ALL businesses carry an inherent amount of financial risk.
It is your duty to determine what level of risk is right for you and to make the decision to NOT BE TYPICAL if you so choose.
To be fair, most of that could be said about ANY online business.
But you’ve been warned.
Pros: Is AWOL Academy Legit?
✓ Run by two experienced affiliate marketers.
Between the two of them, Keala Kanae and Kameron George have run a half-dozen affiliate marketing companies and online programs.
In other words, they walk the walk ‘n talk the talk.
So you can rest assured that they know what they’re doing when it comes to running – and teaching – how to build a successful affiliate marketing business.
✓ A metric sh*t ton of legit training modules.
During my research, it seems like AWOL offers a very detailed set of training modules on every single topic you need to master in the affiliate game.
Not surprisingly, the courses seem to improve as you work your way up through the higher ticket prices.
✓ Charitable wing through Project AWOL.
Like many companies, AWOL Academy earns some brownie points and goodwill with their non-profit charitable wing.
Named after the original form of AWOL Academy, Project AWOL has worked with organizations like Change Heroes and Charity:Water who provides much-needed water projects to underdeveloped communities around the world.
✓ 14-day refund policy.
Not happy with your AWOL membership?
All AWOL customers are entitled to a complete refund within 14 days for any purchase, no questions asked.
Since all the products are online-based (nothing needs to be shipped), if you feel the training is lacking or doesn’t give you what you’re looking for, simply cancel within 14 days and you’ll get your money back.
✓ Generous affiliate program.
For only about $40/mo and with 30 to 60% commissions, the AWOL affiliate program appears to be a good bet for anyone who wants to ride on Keala and Kameron’s coattails.
And profit from it.
For example, if you sold the Masters Academy or AWOL Elite programs as an affiliate, your commission would be $1650 and $4500 respectively.
So, the potential for earnings is definitely there.
AWOL Academy is also very happy to teach you all the details of how to promote their own program.
They’ll basically give you all of their highest converting landing pages, sales funnels, and best strategies on exactly how to promote AWOL to others.
So all you really gotta do is set ‘em up and drive traffic.
If you don’t want to have to think about building your own affiliate marketing products or website, promoting AWOL through their affiliate program is definitely a simpler option.
But as always, simple doesn’t mean easy — so don’t make the cardinal mistake of looking for fast ‘n easy cash here cuz it doesn’t exist.
✓ Good standing with the Better Business Bureau.
As an accredited business with the BBB, they currently have a “B” rating with over 70 reviews.
That’s goes a long way towards being a legit company with legit reviews.
Cons: Why AWOL Academy Sucks
✗ It gets pretty damn expensive, pretty damn fast.
Don’t get me wrong:
$100 for the Pro Academy introductory course is not bad at all for some introductory online business training.
Or $15k-$18k if you join their Elite Mastermind.
Now obviously, if you invest $10k-$15k and end up making $50k back, that’s money well spent.
But if you drop $15k that you can’t afford to lose and you’re not fully committed — maybe not so smart.
You might wanna start small with their beginner programs and actually make some money first, before buying their higher-level courses.
✗ All upsells, all the time.
If the boys at AWOL Academy are good at one thing: it’s upselling.
And they don’t shy away from it.
For example, the questionnaire and phone call included in the Pro Academy package will mainly be used to try to upsell you their more expensive packages.
Which is fine if that’s what you’re interested in.
Not so much if you’re still trying to learn the basics of affiliate marketing and haven’t made a dime yet.
Just be aware that all their products are designed to get you to purchase the next higher-priced course.
In other words, they’ll always be pushing you to buy more of their sh*t.
✗ Not all-inclusive.
Besides the actual training costs, you’ll still have to purchase additional tools and software in order to succeed as an affiliate marketer.
That includes landing page, email management, and tracking software which can easily add up to several hundred bucks per month.
And we can’t forget about paying for the actual traffic.
Since this program teaches you how to use paid advertising rather than SEO (organic or free traffic), you’ll need to constantly be investing in traffic to drive leads to your offers.
Which can cost anywhere from a couple hundred to several thousand dollars per month.
✗ Not everything is as it seems.
Some folks get really pissed off by this, so I thought it was worth mentioning.
You’re not actually getting a personal invitation to a special webinar created just for you.
Even the “live” comments in the chat section are not actually happening in real-time.
This is actually a very common (and effective) form of webinar marketing but some peeps feel that it’s “too fake” and borderline deceptive.
Personally, I don’t have a huge problem with it but your mileage may vary.
AWOL Academy: Bottom Line
|AWOL Academy is run by two experienced affiliate marketers who have a solid track record of success.||Much of the personal interaction at low buy-in levels with AWOL Academy is just a thinly-disguised attempt to upsell you to more expensive products.|
|A large number of detailed and helpful online training modules are available inside their members area.||The price of AWOL Academy's products steadily increases and will ultimately cost between $10k-$18k if you want all their programs and mentorship.|
|The highest-level packages feature direct support from mentors and even the heads of the company themselves.||Besides the training costs, you’ll still have to purchase additional tools and software in order to succeed as an affiliate marketer.|
|The AWOL Academy 14-day refund policy is a good safety valve if you're just looking to try it out and minimize your risk.||Like any online business, the affiliate marketing game is extremely competitive these days and difficult for beginners to achieve success in.|
|The company is accredited with the BBB (B rating) and their charitable wing (Project AWOL) helps a lotta folks and is a nice touch.||Some folks have a problem with their annoying YouTube ads and pre-recorded webinars that are disguised as happening live.|
Does AWOL Academy Really Work?
Sure it does.
At least, for some people.
Especially if your name starts with a “K”.
But the better question is:
Should you plan on going AWOL?
Well, that depends.
Are you searching for “another way of life”?
If so, then congrats — you’re on the right track.
Cuz there’s no doubt about it:
More than the stock market.
Even more than real estate.
If you’re willing to put in the hours and master some digital skill sets…
Another way of life could definitely be yours.
(That kid knows how to party.)
And your search for “the good life” is exactly what the boys at AWOL Academy are taking advantage of.
More power to ’em.
And you know what else?
- If you’re seriously interested in becoming a full-time affiliate marketer…
- And if you’re willing to put in serious time and effort to master the necessary skill sets…
I actually think AWOL Academy could be a solid investment.
But you also better be willing to shell out $10k-$18k for all their programs and some mentorship.
If none of the above is true for you and you’re NOT that serious about it…
Don’t waste your time and money.
Personally, I find affiliate marketing too competitive and oversaturated these days.
So you might wanna try something else.
If not, go AWOL and knock yourself out.
