On the initiative of the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a One-day Seminar on cooperation between the ECO and Mercosur was held in Tehran on October 2, 2011.
His Excellency Dr. Ali Ahani, Deputy foreign Minister of I.R. Iran for Europe and America, delivered an inaugural statement. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between ECO and Mercosur as well as underlined the areas of cooperation between the two organizations. He said that the Member of these two organizations enjoyed huge wealth and high capacities which if brought closer to each other and accompanied by the new technologies they possess, they can play a decisive role in global developments and international economic and political arenas and gain much more bargaining power. H.E. Dr. Ahani added that cooperation can go beyond economic sphere and focus on political and cultural matters as well.
The ECO Secretary General, H.E. Mr. M. Yahya Maroofi, in his address, briefed the meeting on the activities of ECO in various dimensions and emphasized the need for cooperation between the two organizations in the framework of South-South cooperation. He also assured ECO Secretariat’s fullest support and assistance towards materializing the cooperation.
The Ambassador of Uruguay, current Chairman of the Mercosur, in his statement appreciated the initiative. He said the he will follow up the activities and programme of the cooperation between the two organizations.
It was decided that a Working Group comprising representatives of the two sides should be established to explore the possibilities and areas of cooperation.
