The Secretary General, on the combined invitation of the Foreign Ministers of Turkey and Afghanistan, participated in the Istanbul Conference for Afghanistan on November 2, 2011. The conference was opened by the Heads of States of the two countries and the working session was chaired by the Foreign Ministers.
The ECO Secretary General, H.E. Mr. M. Yahya Maroofi, in his remarks expressed the support and commitment of ECO in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and emphasized on the fact that the maintenance of peace and security in Afghanistan is the cardinal requirement to ensure sustainability of the country and the region.
The conference concluded with the Istanbul Declaration which outlined international action in Afghanistan following the drawdown of international forces in 2014. During the meeting the Secretary General called on His Excellency Hamid Karzai, the Honourable President of Afghanistan, to brief the President on the ECO activities in Afghanistan.
