Meeting of H. E. Ambassador Mehmet Gücük, Deputy Undersecretary for Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey with the Secretary General, Economic Cooperation Organization |
H. E. Ambassador Mehmet Gücük, Deputy Undersecretary for Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey called on Mr. M. Yahya Maroofi, ECO Secretary General on 30th November 2011 and discussed the matters of mutual interest. During the course of discussion, Secretary General alluded to the increasing role of ECO as a regional organization. Regarding Afghanistan he emphasized that in order to achieve economic development and stability in Afghanistan, some short and long term initiatives are required to be taken by the international community. Massive industrialization of Afghanistan may not be possible, steps may be taken to develop trade, transport and agriculture in Afghanistan. The Secretary General appreciated the work of EPG and Turkeys contribution of US$ 200,000 towards facilitating its work. Ambassador Gücük, while appreciating the role of ECO in the economic development of Afghanistan, highlighted the contributions of the Republic of Turkey towards the economic and social development of the Afghanistan. He emphasized that the first priority of international community is to establish stability and improve the security situation inside Afghanistan. He agreed with Secretary Generals opinion that ECO can play an effective role in the economic development of Afghanistan. Ambassadors Gücük also emphasized the role of ECO Bank as an important mechanism to finance priority projects in the Member States. In the end, the Secretary General while appreciating Ambassador Gücük, for sparing time from his busy schedule to visit ECO Secretariat, thanked the Ambassador for the kind and generous offer of the Turkish government to host the next CPR in Istanbul.
