UNESCAP High Level Policy Dialogue on Regional Economic Cooperation and Connectivity in the Sub-region

(New Delhi, December 15-16, 2011)

On the occasion of opening the Sub-regional Office of UNESCAP, the ECO Secretary General, upon invitation from UNESCAP, participated in a meeting on High Level Policy Dialogue on Regional Economic Cooperation and Connectivity held in New Delhi on December 15-16, 2011. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, Under-Secretary General of United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP.

The event also brought together personalities with vision for the Sub-region. Nobel Laureate, Professor Amartya Sen from India, in his tour d’ horizon, kicked off the discussions by explaining the contemporary challenges on the global scenes as well as the region.

In two-day intensive meetings, participants expressed their views on issues of world poverty, need for stability and security, role of regional organizations in confronting contemporary regional problems. The regional countries represented at highest level, shared their views on the subject matters before the conference.

The ECO Secretary General in his statement gave overview of ECO’s aims and objectives and its endeavors towards regional integration. He emphasized that ECO maintains a global prospective by working closer with ultra regional bodies as well as UN and International Organizations.
