Visit of the Deputy Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone to the ECO Secretariat, (Tehran18th April, 2010)


H.E. Mr. Hon Vandi Chidi Minah, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Government of Sierra Leone accompanied by H.E. Mr. Alhaji Mohamed Kemoh Fadika, Ambassador of Sierra Leone in Tehran, visited the Secretariat to meet with the Secretary General.

At the outset, the Secretary General welcomed the Deputy Foreign Minister and his delegation to the Secretariat and appreciated their interest in the ECO. He briefed the Deputy Foreign Minister about the activities of the ECO, its membership, objectives, current programmes and future plans in different areas of activities. He also gave an overview of ECO’s external relations. He stated that ECO region is endowed with great potential both in terms of material and human resources. The people of ECO region share common history and culture. The organization has been established with a spirit to utilize the collective potential of the region for the socioeconomic development of its people.

The Deputy Foreign Minister expressed   interest in establishing cooperative relations between ECO and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) of which Sierra Leone is a member. In this regard, he proposed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ECOWAS and ECO. He added that the ECOWAS shares a lot of commonalities with ECO in terms of objective and areas of activities. Both ECO and ECOWAS can benefit from each other’s experiences and best practices in areas of common relevance and interest.  The Secretary General welcomed the proposal to develop regular contact between ECO and ECOWAS.
