The Third ECO Interior Ministers’ Meeting (Istanbul: 23 – 24 December, 2010) |
The Third ECO Interior Ministers’ Meeting was held in Istanbul on 24th December, 2010, under the Chairmanship by His Excellency Mr. Besir Atalay, Interior Minister of the Republic of Turkey. It was preceded by Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) on 23rd December, 2010, chaired by His Excellency Mr. Osman Gunes, Governor Undersecretary of Ministry of Interior of Turkey. The Meetings were attended by the delegates from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Statements were delivered by His Excellency Mr. Besir Atalay, Interior Minister of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Yahya Maroofi, ECO Secretary General and all the Heads of Delegations of the Member States. The Ministers/Heads of delegations delivered their statements, encompassing different issues related to terrorism and transnational organized crimes such as drugs, illegal migration, human trafficking, economic crimes, weapons and ammunition smuggling, and renewed their commitment for cooperation in combating these crimes. The Third ECO Interior Ministers’ meeting reviewed progress made since the second ECO Interior Ministers’ meeting (Ashgabat, 2008). It considered a number of security issues of common concern to the member states, including drugs, terrorism and transnational organized crimes. The participants agreed to intensify cooperation and increase exchange of information and expertise to better address organized crimes and terrorism. The Meeting approved the revised Joint Regional Strategy on Combating Drugs, Terrorism and Trans-national Organized Crime. The Interior Ministers also adopted Istanbul Declaration. The Declaration acknowledged that terrorism and transnational organized crimes posed serious challenges to the ECO countries and to regions beyond. The member states renewed their commitment to cooperate in combating these crimes. The Fourth Meeting of the ECO Interior Ministers’ would be held in Pakistan. |
