First Meeting of Heads of INTERPOL of ECO Member States

(Tehran, 29-30 June, 2010)

 The First Meeting of Heads of INTERPOL of ECO Member States was held in Tehran, the Islamic Republic of Iran, on 29 – 30 June, 2010 hosted by the National Central Bureau of the Islamic Republic of Iran.  The meeting was attended by delegates of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan as well as the ECO Secretary General. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of INTERPOL, INTERPOL Executive Committee Delegate for Asia and the Operative Coordinator for the EC-funded Project titled Fight Against Illicit Drug Trafficking from/to Afghanistan with ECO Member States.            

H.E. Mr. Mostafa Mohammad Nejjar, Minister for Interior of the Islamic Republic of Iran inaugurated the meeting. H.E. General Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, Commander In-Chief of the Police of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Yahya Maroofi, the ECO Secretary General and H.E. Mr. Ronald K. Noble, Secretary General of INTERPOL also made statements during the inaugural session. The statements highlighted the need for setting up of a regional police headquarters for regional security cooperation, and called for rapid exchange of information about crimes in the ECO Member States for ensuring peace and security worldwide.  

The Member States discussed different issues of security related problems including, terrorism and transnational organized crime, and elaborated the activities of the related law-enforcement agencies in their respective countries. They expressed their commitment to enhance security cooperation within the regional context. It was agreed that in order to contribute effectively to regional and global efforts for combating drugs, terrorism and transnational organized crime, there was a strong need for exchange of information and sharing best practices among all the stakeholders of the law enforcements agencies of the ECO Member States. There was a total agreement that these menaces posed serious challenges to the ECO countries and the regions beyond.  

The meeting also adopted a fourteen point, Tehran Declaration. The 2nd Meeting of Heads of INTERPOL of ECO Member States will be held in Pakistan.
