Workshops on “Voluntary Blood Donor Recruitment”

and “Quality System in Blood Transfusion”

Voluntary Donor Recruitment and Quality Assurance in Blood Transfusion are among those fields which have been identified as priority areas by the First Meeting of the Heads of Blood Transfusion Organizations/Authorities (Tehran, 23 – 24 June, 2008).

 Very recently on 26-27 April, 2010 the Second Meeting of the Heads of Blood Transfusion Organizations/Authorities (Ankara, 26-27 April, 2010) also underlined the importance of above-mentioned priority areas.

 “Voluntary Blood Donor Recruitment” and “Quality System in Blood Transfusion” Workshops hosted by the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) in collaboration with the ECO Secretariat on 10-12 May 2010 at ECO Secretariat, Tehran.

 Delegates from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran (Host), the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Turkey participated in the Workshops.

 The objectives and expected goals of these workshops were:

1-     To review and exchange experiences of the voluntary non-remunerated blood donor & quality system programmes and identify constraints;

2-     To update participants on various strategies for donor recruitment, selection and retention and active community participation in promoting voluntary non-remunerated blood donation;

3-     To provide information on how to address the essential elements of a quality system, such as organizational responsibilities, personnel management, quality control, documentation and record-keeping, equipment management, and external quality assessment.

4-     To develop plans for a national voluntary non-remunerated blood donor programme and guidelines on how to implement quality system essentials in testing sites.

 The workshops were conducted in an interactive manner and the programme consisted of presentations, discussions, group activities.  During each presentation, the participants were invited to share their experiences, problems faced by them and achievements made by their respective countries relating to the areas covered in the presentations. Questions raised by the participants were addressed by the presenters and the facilitator in a professional manner.

 Prof. Hassan Abolghasemi, Managing Director of Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) inaugurated the Workshops. Amb. Hassan Taherian, the ECO Deputy Secretary General also made statements during the inaugural session. 

 During the workshop, scientific presentations on the following subjects were delivered by the Iranian prominent experts and scientists: Global Strategy for Voluntary Blood Donation; Estimating Blood Requirements; Identifying and Targeting Safe Blood Donor; Blood Donor Recruitment Strategy; Benefit of Regular Voluntary Blood Donation; Blood Donor Retention Strategy; Role of Research in Donor Recruitment; Blood Donor Program, Monitoring and Evaluation; Introduction to the Quality System; Organization, Structure and Role of the Quality Manager; Job Description; Standard Operating Procedures;  Document Control and Change; Concept of Training; Assessment of Quality System; Hygiene and Safety;  Quality System in Blood Donor Management; Blood Collection and Donor Care Process in IBTO and Quality Systems in Laboratory Testing.

Two group activities focusing on Planning a Blood Donor Program and formulation of a job description was undertaken. The participant actively participated in the group activities and each group demonstrated the presentation prepared by them.

The participants were taken to the IBTO Headquarters. At the last leg of the Workshops, the participants were taken to the Tehran Blood Transfusion Center as well.     

The representative from Pakistan, on behalf of all the participants, thanked the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) and the ECO Secretariat for making excellent arrangements for the Workshops and expressed the hope to continue holding such workshops in future.
