During a meeting with the Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Saturday, at the Ministry of the Interior premises, Mr. Mohammad Yahya Maroofi, the Secretary General of ECO briefed the minister on ECO activities and structure. He mentioned two ministerial meetings which were held in Tehran and Ashgabat and informed the minister on organizing the third meeting to be held in Istanbul Turkey in October 2010. He further invited the minister to attend the aforesaid event. He also elaborated on the situation of drug trafficking and organized crimes such as human smuggling, arm smuggling, money laundry and alike in the ECO region. The Secretary General stated that narcotics production in the ECO region is of a great concern for ECO member states.
Mr. Mostafa Mohammad Najar, the Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran in consideration of proper potentials of the ECO member states underlined the importance of enhancing and expansion of cooperation among countries of the region in all fields. He further said that potential of the region could be used to the best interest and prosperity of its people. Stating that cooperation among member states could have considerable influence on the enhancement of the region, the minister urged for creating requisite infrastructures and ground for sustainable and sound economies. The minister, underlining the urgency of combating against drug trafficking, human smuggling, money laundering, and organized crimes which strengthen stability and security in the region, he reiterated that in order to witness a sustainable economic development, there has to be more coordination in all areas among member states. He further called on the Secretary General to make optimal use of international organization and ECO member states' potentials, capacities and experiences for expansion and strengthening relations among its members.
Referring to Secretary General's invitation to the 3rd Ministerial Meeting of the Interior to be held in Turkey, Mr. Najar confirmed that Islamic Republic of Iran will be represented by a high level delegation. The minister said that the Iranian side will host the 1st Meeting of the Heads of Interpol, the 1st Meeting of the Chief Anti-narcotic police, the 1st Border Police Commander of ECO and High Level Expert Group Meeting on Combating Drug, Terrorism and Organized Crimes in 2010.
