The 1st Meeting of the Pre-COP (Conference of Parties) on Biodiversity was held in Antalya, Republic of Turkey on 3 – 4 May, 2010. It was attended by the delegates of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkey (host). A delegation of the Secretariat also participated in it.
The participants made statements/presentations depicting the policies, programmes and projects of their respective countries regarding implementation of the ECO Plan of Action for Cooperation among ECO Member States in the field of Biodiversity.
The participants particularly emphasized that the access and benefit sharing of genetic resources is very important for ECO Member States. The meeting recommended that ECO Member States should evolve a common position on this issue in the 10th COP Meeting of Convention of Biodiversity to be held in October 2010 in Nagoya (Japan) and ECO Secretariat should also attend meetings of Convention on Biodiversity as an observer and express the common position of ECO Member States in these meetings. The meeting also recommended that Pre-COP meetings should be held biennially and the Kyrgyz Republic offered to host the next Pre-COP meeting in 2012.
