The Secretary General participated in the 18th Meeting of the OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum for “Promoting good governance at border crossing, improving the security of land transportation and facilitating international transport by road and rail in the OSCE region” held on 24-26 May 2010 in the beautiful city of Praque.
The Secretary General in his statement gave an overview of the activities of ECO interalia the initiative of the organization in the field of trade and land transportation in the region. The Secretary General also participated in the panel meeting devoted to transit between the South and North. In the course of discussions, the participant emphasized the need for good governance, simplification of custom formalities, visa regulations, anti-corruption measures to assure an efficient transit transport system along those corridors.
During his stay, the Secretary General met with the Secretary General of OSCE in which both sides emphasized the need for closer cooperation. OSCE was invited to participate in the initiatives by ECO “Trial Demonstration run of container train on Istanbul-Tehran-Islamabad route”. It was agreed that the future cooperation between the two organizations could be constituted on the basis of exchange of letters defining the scope of joint activities. The Secretary General of OSCE stated that his team shall follow the ensuing developments in this regard. The Secretary General of OSCE expressed interest that the OSCE representatives in the area will attend the ceremonies for welcoming the truck caravan.
