The above events were attended by the delegates of seven Member States namely Azerbaijan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkey. The meetings reviewed the progress made regarding the implementation of the ECO Plan of Action on Ecotourism and considered suggestions to enhance regional cooperation in the field of ecotourism. The list of activities prepared by Azerbaijan for 2010-11 was thoroughly discussed and amended. As proposed by Azerbaijan, the meeting requested the Republic of Turkey to act as a Coordinating Country for 2012-13 which was agreed to by the Turkish delegation. It was felt that another Expert level meeting was necessary to discuss further the issues relating to Ecotourism. The Republic of Turkey offered to host the next (3rd) Experts Group Meeting on Ecotourism at Antalya in Turkey in 2012. During the International Ecoregion Conference on Assessment bases of the Environmental, Economic and Cultural Benefits of Ecotourism detailed presentations were made depicting socio-economic aspects of ecotourism in Azerbaijan, role of ecotourism in protection of nature and the problems being faced to promote ecotourism. A field visit to Shirvan National Park was also arranged for the delegates on the following day. They were briefed about the efforts being made by the Government of Azerbaijan to preserve ecology and provide sanctuary to wild animals to save their species from extinction. |
