Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA)
(Istanbul, 7-9 June 2010)

 


On the joint invitation of the Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Turkey and Kazakhstan, I participated in the 3rd Summit of Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) held in Istanbul on 7-9 June 2010. The meeting brought together important leaders from the region and senior representatives of the member countries. The Heads of Regional Organizations and the Under Secretary General of UN were, also, invited.

In all statements, the need for sustainable peace, dialogue and resolution of conflicts through peaceful means were emphasised. Terrorism, the problem of drug, corruption, etc. were identified as major threats to the security in the region. The Secretary General in his statement, while emphasising the need for peace and stability as the corner stone of the daunting challenges confronting the region, gave an overview of ECO activities contributing to cooperation and understanding among Member States and the region as a whole. The Secretary General expressed the readiness of ECO to work closer with the relevant bodies on matters of common interest. The meeting was ended with the declaration of CICA and the conclusions of the Chairman, H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül, who have succeded the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as the former Chairman, to shoulder the responsibilities. The leader of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. President Nursultan Nazarbayev, was unanimously praised by the Summit for his vision and stewardship of CICA.

The occasion provided the opportunity for the Secretary General to meet the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan on matters of mutual interests and brief exchange of words with some of the regional leaders, H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül, the President of the Republic of Turkey and the Prime Minister of the Federation of Russia, His Excellency Mr. Vladimir Putin.
