The opening ceremony for the ECO Nanotechnology Network was held at the Iran Nanotechnology Initiatives Council (INIC) in Tehran on 26 May, 2009. The inauguration was performed by Mr. Saeed Sarkar, Secretary (INIC), and Amb. Hassan Taherain, Deputy Secretary General of ECO. The representatives of ECO member states, including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and officials of the ECO Secretariat and UNIDO were present on the occasion.
During the ceremony, a Letter of Agreement between ECO and INIC was signed for utilization of US$ 50,000 from the ECO Feasibility Fund. The website of ECO-Nanotechnology Network was initiated under the web address of www.econano.org. The inauguration was followed by presentations and an exhibition on nanotechnology.
The main goal of the Network is to strengthen cooperation among ECO countries in nano-technological research and development. The experiences of the member states would synergize development measures and policy formulation on nanotechnology in such sectors as public health, employment, occupational safety, information society, industry, innovation, environment, energy, transport, security and space.
