The 1st Training Course for ECO Countries

On the Application of Geospatial Information System (GIS)

for Presenting Statistical Data Collection

 Tehran, 19-22 April 2009

The First Training Course for ECO Countries on Application of Geospatial Information System (GIS) for Statistical Data Collection was held on 19-22 April 2009 at the Statistical Research and Training Center in Tehran. It was hosted by the Statistical Center of Iran. 

Participants from 7 member countries, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran (host country) as well as members of the ECO Secretariat attended the Workshop. 

The Workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Aziz Roosta, Deputy Head of the Statistical Center of Iran and Ms. Bayan Adilbekova, Director for Projects, Economic Research and Statistics of ECO. The inaugural statements stressed the importance of knowledge-sharing in the region. The SCI representative noted that the GIS could be effectively used for statistical data collection in geography, descriptive information system, geology, energy, transport and other areas. 

In the course of the workshop, the participants received a hands-on training in implementing the GIS in practice. Training focused on Geographic Mapping, Cartography, Remote Sensing, Geological Survey, Map Editing with emphasis to statistical data collection.

During the closing session Dr. Avazalipoor, Head of the Statistical Research and Training Center, spoke on the impact of the ECO-led training on the continuous capacity building in the region, including in statistical information processing. It was stressed that in view of practical efficiency of the training courses for the member states, such opportunities are for the benefit of the region.
