The representative of UNOCHA in Tehran, Dr. Ali Ashraf Mojtahed Shabestari, called on the Secretary General, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Yahya Maroofi, on October 21, 2009 to discuss matters of common interest and cooperation between ECO and UNOCHA in the area of Disaster Risk Management, preparedness and response. The Secretary General while appreciating UNOCHA’s cooperation and assistance in the past, stressed the need to further enhance the cooperative relations between the two organizations. He also underscored the need to develop joint projects/master plan of action for ECO region in consultation with UNOCHA to enhance regional cooperation and capacity in the area of Disaster Risk Management. Dr. Ali Ashraf Mojtahed Shabestari conveyed his full support to the proposal of jointly developing projects/master plan of action to enhance regional capability to deal with the natural disasters/calamities. He also acknowledged the rich experience of Secretary General in dealing with International Agencies/Organizations and expressed that this experience would help in further strengthening the relationship between ECO and UNOCHA. It was also decided that in the coming weeks both the Organizations would engage at the expert/technical level to discuss the modalities of further coopeation/engagement.
