H.E. Mr. Mohammed Yahya Maroofi’s visit to Turkmenistan

The Secretary General, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Yahya Maroofi, visited Turkmenistan from October 25- 28, 2009. During the visit, which coincided with the National Day of Turkmenistan, he called on the President, H.E. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow,  Deputy of the Minister’s Council for Economic Affairs and the Foreign Minster of the Turkmenistan besides participating in a ceremony in Ashgabat held in connection with the National Day Celebrations. The Secretary General held very fruitful discussions with the top political leadership of the country. While appreciating the achievements of Turkmenistan in different areas, he highlighted its importance as an important regional member of the ECO family. The Secretary General hoped that Turkmenistan would continue to play a more active role in ECO in the future. He also invited Turkmenistan to join all the major agreements of ECO like ECOTA and TTFA. The President of Turkmenistan while terming ECO an important regional Organization assured of his full support for the ECO activities. In the area of transport, he asked the Secretary General to actively follow up on the Turkmenistan-Almaty-Tehran Railway Project. The Deputy of the Ministers Council and the Foreign Minister also underscored the importance of ECO and reiterated their commitment to the collective goals and objectives of the ECO.
