The First Meeting of the Committee on the Establishment of the ECO Seed Association (ECOSA) was held on March 14-16, 2009, in Antalya. It was hosted by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Turkey and jointly organized by ECO Secretariat, FAO, ICARDA, Turkish Seed Union (TURKTOB) and TIKA. Delegations from ECO Member States, ECO Secretariat, FAO and ICARDA participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, the Draft Bylaw for the Establishment of the ECO Seed Association was finalized and approved as mandated and authorized by the 4th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture (Baku 2008) and 18th ECO Council of Ministers (Tehran 2009). The meeting also devised a Road Map for the operationalization of the ECO Seed Association. Accordingly, ECOSA has been established. Local registration procedure has been initiated and is expected to be completed soon.
The Bylaw of ECOSA has been signed by Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Turkey have applied for membership of ECOSA. Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan have shown willingness to join on establishment of their respective national seed associations. Tajikistan stated that it would apply in near future. Some private companies, including Oil Seed Research and Development Company from Iran and Polen and Safgen from Turkey have applied for Associate Membership. ECO, FAO, ICARDA, and TIKA may be admitted as observers.
Members of the Board of ECOSA were appointed from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Turkey.
