The 2nd High Level Expert Group Meeting held in Dushanbe

The 2nd High Level Expert Group Meeting on Statistics of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) was held on 24-25 September 2009 in Dushanbe. At its inaugural session at the State Committee on Statistics of Republic of Tajikistan, the 2nd HLEGM recognized the need to develop a comprehensive strategy on capacity building in the region. Participants highlighted that the strategy should be able to capture the multi-faceted aspects of the functioning of the statistical system, in whole.

 

 Also, the need for regional assistance in conducting surveys and censuses was stressed. In this regard, FAO and UNICEF offered their advisory and technical support in training as well as conducting joint projects. Improvement of the use of information technology in statistics as well as the harmonized methodology, measurements and standards were recognized as an effective sustainable solution for obtaining relevant statistics to support policymaking. In this regard, the outline of new project\programme proposals, including with UNIDO and UNESCAP, were stated important. The 3rd HLEGM is scheduled to be held in October 2010 in Afghanistan.
