The 6th Meeting of ECO National Focal Points for Statistics and Economic Research

The 6th Meeting of ECO National Focal Points for Statistics and Economic Research was held on 17-18 November 2008 in Ankara.  It was inaugurated by Dr. Unal Gundogan, Vice President of the Turkish Statistical Institute.

 Participants from ECO Member States discussed and adopted the work program, the calendar of events for 2008-09 and the table of ECO key statistical indicators. The participants welcomed the two training events scheduled for 2009 for capacity building of ECO National Statistical Offices. These would focus on national accounts and compiling geological sciences’ data base.

Also deliberated at the meeting in Ankara were ongoing and new economic research projects and ECO publications. Special was attention paid to use of innovative techniques in economic research and long-term perspectives of widening intra-regional trade.  The Meeting stressed the need for streamlining project monitoring in ECO.           

In addition to the member states, the participants included Representatives of ECO Trade Development Bank, FAO and SESRIC. Their presence enriched the deliberations and reflected the importance they attached to further strengthening cooperation with ECO countries.

The 7th NFP Meeting will be hosted by the Kyrgyz Republic. The date will be worked out shortly.
