The First High Level Group Meeting of ECO National Statistical Offices was held on 26-28 October 2008 in Tehran. Representatives of ECO member states have discussed ways of strengthening cooperation in statistics in the region. The HLEGM adopted its rules of procedure and the work program for 2008-09. It was agreed that the HLEG will meet on a permanent basis. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran have offered their support in providing: training, technology information dissemination and advisory expertise. The HLEG is now set forth to update, streamline and bring into conformity the statistical measurements used by ECO, to achieve greater compliance with UN-adopted standards. The meeting welcomed Iran’s proposal to establish a statistical network to serve as an institutional mechanism of cooperation in statistics. If approved by ECO decision makers, such network will be jointly used by all member states as an integrated information and technology database. Representatives of ECO’s international partner organizations, including UNIDO, UNFPA, UNECE, FAO, SESRIC and IDB exchanged their views on the HLEGM agenda. The next meeting is expected to be hosted by Tajikistan during 2009.
