The National Workshop on Multimodal Transport in the Islamic Republic of Iran, was held at the ECO Secretariat Tehran on 6-7 July, 2008. About 50 key stakeholder from the government and private sectors participated in the workshop. They included policy makers, high level officials, forwarders logistic providers, transport associations, customs officials, lawyers, transit transport experts as well as Resource Persons from UNCTAD, IDB, and the Geneva-based International Multimodal Transport Association (IMMTA). His Excellency Dr. Behbahani, Deputy Minister for Road and Transportation of the Government of Iran inaugurated the meeting. He stressed the significance of Multi-Modal Transport in promoting the Transit Trade in the region. He also emphasized the need for developing a unified legal regime for governing International Multimodal Transport among ECO Member States. Dr. Alybayev, the ECO Deputy Secretary-General, also made a statement during the inaugural session. He underlined that ECO’s main legal vehicle for transport cooperation was the Transit Transport Framework Agreement (TTFA). The participants discussed Multimodal Transport (MMT) and its potential benefits to the national economy, transit trade and transport industry. They also analyzed obstacles to MMT in member states and drew up a set of concrete recommendations, outlining technical assistance and investment proposals for development of MMT. The workshop was the first of the ten national MMT workshops to be held during 2008 in the ECO Member States. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan would host the next workshop on 28-29 July 2008. | |||
