ECO Secretary General’s meeting with His Excellency Mr. Mehdi Hashemi, the Acting Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran

A meeting between Mr. Khurshid Anwar, the ECO Secretary General and His Excellency Mr. Mehdi Hashemi, the Acting Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran was held on 29th June, 2008 at the Iranian Interior Ministry.  The meeting provided a useful opportunity to discuss matters relating to the ECO Interior Ministers’ meeting.  These included fight against drug trafficking, and organized crimes, cooperation in border control and management of natural disasters.

Mr. Hashemi appreciated the ongoing cooperation among ECO Member States in these fields.  He said, it would lead to strengthening ties among them in diverse other areas.  He particularly mentioned cooperation on border control as one of the important items raised during 2nd ECO Interior Ministers’ meeting held in Ashgabat, May, 2008.  He assured Iran’s support for follow-up action on the decisions of the Ashgabat meeting.  The Minister referred to the establishment of data bank on organized crimes as a very important development.  He also emphasized the need for closer cooperation in management of natural disasters.

The ECO Secretary General thanked the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran for its support to ECO’s initiatives and expressed the hope that it would increase further in the month and years ahead.  He said that security and stability were essential conditions for sustainable economic development in the region.  Therefore, ECO had to close ranks in this area and work determinedly.  The Secretary General briefed the Minister on important recent meetings to intensify ECO cooperation in the fight against drugs and transnational crimes.  The Minister commended these efforts which, he said, would have the fullest support of his Ministry.
