Specialized Experts Task Group (SETG) of ECO on Power

The 7th Meeting of the Specialized Experts Task Group (SETG) of ECO on Power was held in Islamabad on 6-7 February 2008. It was inaugurated by Mr. Muhammad Ismail Qureshi, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Water and Power of the Government of Pakistan. The participants included the representatives of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Turkey. Mr. Muhammad Ismail Qureshi recalled that the idea of establishing a joint power system among countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) was adopted in the Quetta Plan of Action in 1993. The objective was to share the energy resources of the region among ECO member states and so enhance their economic and industrial development.

The meeting reviewed progress of the feasibility study of interconnection of power systems of ECO countries. It is being conducted by the M/s NESPAK (Pakistan). NESPAK made a presentation to the meeting which discussed the Inception Report and recommended that the Revised Inception Report be submitted by the end of February, 2008. The Consultant delivered data questionnaire for the Interim Report which the Member States would fill in and return to the Consultant within two months.

The SETG also discussed new implementation schedule for the study, presented by the Consultant. It called on NESPAK to accelerate completion of the study. The revised schedule reduced the study span by 3 months.

The Ministry of Water and Power of Pakistan being the coordinating authority for the project presented the Action Plan for the interconnection of power systems of ECO countries. The Report of the 7th SETG Meeting was unanimously adopted. The offer of the delegation of Turkey to host the next (8th) SETG Meeting on Power was warmly welcomed.
