Press Release The 2nd Workshop on Multimodal Transport in the ECO Region was held in Tehran on 25-27 June 2007. The Workshop was attended by the National Consultants and representatives of seven Member States, namely Afghanistan Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan, as well as the International Consultant, the Representatives of IDB, UNCTAD, and the ECO Secretariat. The Meeting was inaugurated by Mr. Serik Alybayev, Deputy Secretary General of ECO. In his statement Mr. Alybayev emphasized the need to proper trade transport facilitation measures particularly at border-crossings. Mr. Nik Zainal Abidin, Director of IDB Regional Office in Almaty, and Mr. Sham Bathija, the representative of UNCTAD also delivered inaugural statements. The National Consultant from Member States presented their country reports on Multimodal Transport development. Also the UNCTAD consultant presented the region-wide report on Multimodal Transport. The ECO Secretariat presented a briefing on emerging regional regimes\agreements and the latest legal status of MMT in international laws/conventions. The Secretariat also reported on trend of containerization and development of ICDs in the ECO region, and its initiatives in the field of Trade and Investment. The workshop discussed the ways to implementation of its MMT related provisions of the TTFA, as well as the Programme of Action for ECO decade of Transport and came up with some practical recommendations in this regard. The Workshop concluded with a number of concrete suggestions and recommendations for development of Multimodal Transport in the region and future activities of the joint MMT Project. At the sidelines of the Workshop, an Inter-Agency Meeting was held (in 27 June) between the ECO, IDB and UNCTAD on the progress with the Multimodal Joint Project, and on the ways to continue and scale up the transport related collaboration between the above organizations. This Meeting highly appreciated the successful completion of first Component of the Project (including studies on trade facilitation and multi-modal transport in the region and two regional workshops), and agreed on concrete measures to organize 10 national workshops in the field of Multimodal Transport Development.
