Entrepreneurship and SME Development

The 1st ECO Steering Committee meeting on SME’s was held on 14-15 January, 2008 in Tehran with participating of these member states; the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of Turkey. The meeting was inaugurated by Dr. Vaezi Ashtiani, Deputy Minister of Industries and Mines and President of ISIPO. Mr. Mustafa Demirezen, the Deputy Secretary General of ECO Secretariat also made a statement.

The Committee considered a number of proposals envisaged in the Plan of Action on SMEs. It agreed on the following:

    • The Proposal of Iran for a Research Project to Establish ECO SME Fair.

    • The Proposal of Pakistan for a Digital Information Exchange Network for ECO (IDENE).

    • The Proposal of Turkey for Training Workshop(s) on Best Practices by KOSGEB.

The Committee also considered establishment of a policy dialogue platform in the form of a roundtable. The participants would include heads of SME organizations and private sector representatives. To give further stimulus to cooperation on SMEs, establishment of HLEG and 'Heads meeting' of SME organizations was also considered. The meeting decided to take these two issues to the HLEG on Industry for consideration and necessary decision. 

The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan bilaterally considered the Pakistan’s proposal for establishment of industrial estates/clusters in their border cities/areas. The meeting also discussed such a proposal for industrially weak developed areas of member countries of ECO. 

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan expressed its readiness to host the 2nd Steering Committee meeting in 2009.
