The ECO Regional Center for Risk Management of Natural Disasters was inaugurated in Mashhad on September 04, 2007. H.E. Mohammad Rahmati, Minister for Roads and Transport of the Islamic Republic of Iran, performed the inauguration. The ceremony was attended, among others, by ECO Secretary General, Iran's Deputy Ministers for Transport and Interior also the Ambassadors of Iran and Tajikistan. Representatives of FAO, IDB, ADPC, UNDP and WMO were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, two days of deliberations among the ECO Heads of Meteorological Organizations concluded with a Memorandum of Understanding which was signed at the ceremony. The MoU provides for setting up Regional Center for Risk Management of Natural Disaster and cooperation in drought monitoring and early warning. The meeting was attended by representatives of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The MoU was signed by all these counties except Uzbekistan.
