6th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Transport & Communications

          The sixth ECO Ministerial meeting on Transport & Communications of ECO countries will be held in Tehran on April 26, 2006. It will be preceded by the Senior Officials’ Meeting on April 24-25, 2006. The meeting will be chaired by H.E. Seyed Mohammad Rahmaty, Minister of Roads and Transportation of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Ministers dealing with Transport and Communications of the Member States are expected to attend this meeting.

 

          The Ministerial meeting, inter-alia, will discuss the following issues related to the Transport and Communications:

  • ECO Road and Railway Network Maps and Road Directory.

  • Trans-Asian Railway main line.

  • Review of the implementation of the Programme of Action for the ECO Decade of Transport and Communications (1998-2007).

  • The requirements for the development of multimodal transport in the ECO region taking into account the first and second phases of ECO Multimodal Transport Project.

  • Status of Transit Transport Framework Agreement (TTFA) and taking necessary measures for implementation of this document through establishment of the Transit Transport Coordination Council (TTCC).

  • Measures/actions in the field of road and sea transport.

  • The special needs of landlocked countries for transit transport in the ECO region and considering the role of ECO transit countries in this regard with attention and emphasis on Almaty Programme of Action (Almaty, August 28-29, 2003).

  • Implementation of the Plan for development of telecommunications and postal links in the ECO region as well as the measures taken in these fields.

The meeting assumes greater significance because it will take decisions on issues such as the implementation of Transit Transport Framework Agreement (TTFA) as well as the review of the Programme of Action for the ECO Decade of Transport & Communications which will expire in 2007. The meeting will also consider ways and means to bolster cooperation in the fields of road, rail and marine transport. It will also review the status of cooperation amongst the ECO member countries in the fields of telecommunications and postal links.

 

The 5th ECO Ministerial meeting on Transport and Communications was held in Cholpon-Ata (Kyrgyz Republic) on August 10-12, 2004.
