ECO Secretary General calls on the Iranian Head of Environment Protection Organization

ECO Secretary General, H. E. Mr. Askhat Orazbay, paid a courtesy call on the new Iranian Head of the Environment Protection Organization, H. E. Mrs. Vaez Javadi, here on Tuesday, January 17, 2006.

In this visit, Mr. Orazbay briefed about recent activities and achievements of the Organization, particularly in the field of Environment, such as preparation for establishment of ECO College of Environment, publication of ECO Bulletin on Environment and implementation of the Plan of Action (2003-2007) for cooperation among the ECO Member States on Environment. He stressed the follow up efforts of the ECO Secretariat regarding the decisions of the two previously held ECO Ministerial Meetings on Environment, and added that these meetings are proper occasions for better coordination among the Member States regarding environmental joint activities. He also referred to the 3^rd ECO Ministerial Meeting on Environment, due to be held in Kazakhstan in May/June 2006, while inviting Iranian authorities to take their crucial role to enrich the agenda of the said meeting.

Mrs. Vaez Javadi, while welcoming the ECO delegates, stated that we may go beyond sustainable development and get to sustainable exploitation of the resources. She stressed that the doors should be opened to the public so they would also find out what we are protecting and get their interaction in preserving the environment.

Referring to the climatic diversity of Iran, Mrs. Javadi supported the idea of promoting Ecological Tourism (Ecotourism) as one of the main objectives of public engagement in environment protection activities. It was added that Iran is preparing a set of concrete proposals in order to promote the environmental cooperation among the ECO Member States which would be duly submitted to the upcoming ECO Ministerial Meeting On Environment for consideration and approval.

At the end of the meeting, ECO Secretary General formally invited Mrs. Javadi to attend the 3^rd ECO Ministerial Meeting on Environment in Kazakhstan.
