          On October 4, 2005, the ECO Secretary General, H.E. Mr. Askhat Orazbay met Mr. Stefan Schimming, Director General of International Organization for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF) in his office. In this meeting OTIF Director General gave a comprehensive report of the activities of his Organization which deals with railway transport of its 42 member states of which Iran and Turkey from the ECO are also included. He explained that the important protocol of 3 June 1999 for the Modification of the Convention Concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF) needs one more member state’s ratification to come into force.

          In this meeting, the ECO Secretary General also briefed his guest, who was in Iran to attend the 33^rd Railway Ministerial Meeting of OSJD, on the activities of the ECO in transport sector. He specifically referred to the important strategic railway route connecting Almaty in Kazakhstan to Istanbul in Turkey and its continuation to China in East and to Europe in the West. The two sides agreed to exchange information on the two Organizations’ activities and work programmes in order to explore way of cooperation between them.
