ECO Secretary General, Mr. Askhat Orazbay, headed the ECO Secretariat’s first mission to Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on 4-6 June 2005. The mission basic purpose was to review the ECO Secretariat’s participation in the international community’s reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan and to get first hand knowledge about the projects being proposed by the authorities of Afghanistan to be undertaken by the ECO Secretariat in order to operationalize and activate the ECO Special Fund for Reconstruction of Afghanistan.
During his mission to Afghanistan ECO Secretary General was received by Mr. Hamid Karzai, the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and other high dignatories including Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammad Amin Farhang, Minister of Economy, Mr. Anwar-ul Haq Ahadi, Minister of Finance, Mrs. Massuda Jalal, Minister for Women Affairs, Mr. Mohammad Amin Arsala, Minister of Commerce, Mr. Mohammad Yusof Pashtun, Minister of Urban Development and Professor Nazir Ahmad Shahidi, Deputy Minister of Economy.
Upon the request of the ECO Delegation a meeting was held at the Ministry of Public Benefit with the participation of representatives from the Ministries of Public Benefit, Transport, Economy, Agriculture, Environment and Commerce. ECO Secretary General briefed the participants about the ECO Special Fund for Reconstruction of Afghanistan.
Mr. Orazbay, ECO Secretary General, also visited Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and had a meeting with the Acting president of the ECO – CCI there. They discussed the joint implementation of the ECO- CCI Trade Fair and 10th Executive Committee Meeting of ECO- CCI to be held tentatively in September 2005 in Kabul.
During his mission ECO Secretary General met with the Country Director of UNDP in Afghanistan in which he gave brief information on the Agreement signed between Afghanistan Government and UNDP on the Promotion of Regional Supply of Goods, Services and Expertise for Reconstruction of Afghanistan.
The first mission to Afghanistan aimed to set up personal working contacts with relevant Afghan authorities in order to expedite operationalization of the ECO Special Fund for Reconstruction of Afghanistan.
