High Level Experts Meeting on ECO Road Network Map

On June 22-23, 2005 the High Level Experts Meeting on ECO Road Network Map was held in Tehran in the ECO Secretariat.

 

The participants from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kyrgyz Republic, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Uzbekistan took part in the meeting.

 

The ECO Secretary General Mr. Askhat Orazbay inaugurated the meeting. In his opening speech he highlighted the importance of publication of Railway and Road Network Maps and ECO Road Directory to forge closer cooperation in the field of Transport and Communications in the ECO region. He expressed the deep appreciation of the readiness of the Ministry of Road and Transportation of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Turkey to undertake these important tasks.

 

During the meeting the participants discussed on the main issue for which the meeting was organized including deliberations on the conditions, specifications and characteristics of the ECO Road Network Map. Participants offered technical proposals to be incorporated in the future Road Network Map. They briefed the meeting with their reports on the missing road links in their respective countries and finally agreed that the UNESCAP road standards and classification be taken as a basis for the ECO Road Network Map since all the ECO member states are members of UNESCAP.

 

Preparation on the Road Network Directory which has been suggested to be published by Turkey in the Programme of Action for ECO Decade of Transport and Communications (1998-2007) was discussed as another issue of the meeting and the member states were requestted to provide Turkey with the requisite information for the same purpose.
