The 3rd ECO Seminar on Trade & Investment Information Networking in the ECO was held in Karachi, Pakistan on January 31-February 01. The Board of Investment, Ministry of Privatization and Investment of the Government of the Islamic State of Pakistan hosted the Seminar. The Seminar attended by National Focal Points/Experts from the Islamic State of Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Turkey, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan and Republic of Tajikistan participated in the Seminar. Representatives of Chambers of Commerce and Industries of Member States and International organizations i.e. International Trade Centre (ITC) and Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) also attended the Seminar. The agenda of the Seminar was to formulate/prepare a sound and realistic Plan of Action on the Cooperation on the Trade and Investment Information in the ECO Region. The ECO Website on the Trade Net was introduced in the Seminar. The ITC expert presented a package on the ECO Trade Net for further upgradation and improvement of ECO Trade Net for the benefit the facility by ECO Member States. The President of Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) proposed to sign an MOU between the ICCI and ECO Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECO-CCI) for further cooperation on promotion of trade and investment and provide active roles among the private sectors in the ECO and OIC Member States in this regard.

 

The Seminar was inaugurated by H.E. Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Federal Minister for Privatization and Investment of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and ECO Representative. H.E. Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, in his inaugural statement pointed out that ECO provides a unique opportunity for its members, to overcome the challenges and repercussions of globalization and needs to further develop its relations within the framework of regional cooperation and said that the goals for the promotion of trade can better be achieved by the Trade and Investment Networking of the ECO region.  

 

The delegations from the Member States and International Organizations considered concluding the draft Plan of Action on the further development of ECO Trade and Investment Networking with recommendations made by the representative of ITC and Member States.

 

On the sidelines of the above Seminar, the Expo 2005 Pakistan trade fair organized by the Export Promotion Bureau, Government of Pakistan took place on February 02-05, 2005 in Karachi, Pakistan. The Expo 2005 was visited by the delegates/National Chambers.
