The 8th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit to be attended by the Heads of State/Government of the Member States will be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 14 September 2004. The meeting will be preceded by Senior Officials meeting on 10-11 September and Council of Ministers meeting on 12 September. The meeting will also be attended by heads/representatives of various UN and other regional and international organizations with whom ECO has evolved working relationship.
The meeting will review the status of the implementation of various ECO projects and will discuss ways and means to expedite them. The Summit will also consider the reports of the Chairman of the 14th Council of Ministers and the Secretary General. The meeting would provide an opportunity to the ECO leaders to discuss the challenges facing ECO region and give policy guidelines for bolstering economic cooperation within the region.
Among other issues which are likely to be discussed during the meeting include ECO’s participation in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and measures to combat drug trafficking and review the enforcement of important ECO agreements such as ECO Trade Agreement, TTFA etc.
ECO gives excellence awards to the nationals of its member states for outstanding research work in the fields of economics, research, culture, literature and fine arts, science, technology, education, agriculture and environment. These awards will be presented to winners on the sidelines of the 8th ECO Summit.
At the end of the Summit, Dushanbe Declaration is likely to be issued which will give policy guidelines for improving level of cooperation in various fields of economic sphere.
