The First ECO Senior Officials Meeting on Agriculture would be held in the ECO Secretariat, Tehran from 26-28 July 2004. The Islamic Republic of Iran will host the meeting.
The Deputy Ministers of Agriculture and other delegates from the ten ECO member countries: Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkey, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan would participate in the meeting.
The principal objectives of ECO in agriculture sector include contributing economic development of the Member States, identifying regional challenges, problems and areas of common interests in agriculture as well as regional priorities for technical assistance, food security, enhancing investment and increasing agricultural trade. All these objectives require a high level of regional cooperation.
During the three days proceedings, the delegates will consider cooperation in various fields of agriculture at regional level and further development of regional collaborations among the Member States. The Meeting will also review the implementation of the decisions of the First ECO Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture held in 2002 especially in the areas of drought management, food security, development of post harvesting and processing industry, water management and trade promotion.
The Meeting will also consider cooperation of the ECO Member States in livestock sector such as establishment of Buffer Zones in the border areas of the member states for animal quarantine and a Commission for Prevention and Control of the Livestock Disease in the region.
The outcomes of the Senior Officials Meeting on Agriculture would be submitted to the forthcoming 2nd ECO Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture scheduled to be held in the Republic of Turkey in December 2004. The Senior Officials will also review the preparations for the said Ministerial Meeting.
