2nd meeting of Eminent Persons Group (EPG) of Economic Cooperation Organization was held at the ECO Secretariat Tehran on 22-25 May, 2004. The Eminent Persons (EPs) H.E. Ambassador Bagher Asadi of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Dr. Nigmatzhan Issingarin of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Ambassador (Retd.) Javid Husain of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Nuriddin Kayumov of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Ambassador (Retd.) Mr. Onder Ozar of the Republic of Turkey and H.E. Mr. Askhat Orazbay, Secretary General of ECO participated in the meeting.
The Eminent Persons Group reviewed in detail the achievements made by ECO in the priority areas and suggested ways and means to attain the targets set for the Organization in various plans of action as soon as possible. It recommended preparation and adoption of an ECO Vision Strategy focusing on specific goals to be achieved in the next decade by the ECO member states. The Group also reviewed the state of relations between ECO and other international organizations with a view to make them more meaningful. The Group studied the organizational structure of the ECO Secretariat in order to further build its capacity and to improve its performance. The Group appreciated an Analytical Paper prepared by the Secretariat on the above subjects.
The recommendations made by the EPG will be submitted to the next meeting of ECO Council of Ministers for approval which is scheduled to take place in Dushanbe (Tajikistan) on 12th September 2004.
The EPG was set up in pursuance of the decision taken at the 13th meeting of ECO Council of Ministers. 1st meeting of the Group was held in Tehran in January 2004.
