7^th General Assembly Meeting of

ECO Chamber of Commerce and Industry

PRESS RELEASE

          The 7^th General Assembly Meeting of ECO Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECO-CCI), hosted by the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was held in Kabul on 20 April 2004.

          Inaugurating the meeting Mr. Askhat Orazbay, Secretary General of ECO underlined the need to reactivate ECO-CCI  and make it an effective body of ECO.

          The delegates of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan attended the Assembly.

          The Assembly discussed proposals on developing new mechanism and modalities for better interaction between member states, business communities of ECO region and ways and means to reactivate ECO-CCI. It was decided to give chairmanship of the ECO-CCI to Afghanistan for two years. Mr. Sohail Altaf, Vice President of the Pakistan Federation of Commerce and Industry in his capacity as the current Chairman of ECO-CCI, formally handed over the charge of chairmanship to Mr. Gul Ahmad Houshmand, President Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

          Afghanistan also offered to host 10^th Executive Committee meeting of ECO-CCI in October 2004 in Kabul.
