Secretary General of ECO H. E. Bekzhasar Narbayev called on H. E. Hafiz Pasha Assistant Secretary General and Regional Director of United Nations and H. E Jose Antonio Ocampo, the Deputy Secretary General of United Nations on September 29, 2003 in New York.

Ambassador Narbayev was in New York to attend the 58^th session of United Nations General Assembly. Since ECO has observer status with United Nations, he apprised Mr. Hafiz Pasha on the status of cooperative relations between ECO and United Nations Development Program (UNDP). He emphasized on the need to extend more funding and technical assistance for ECO region. Mr. Pasha who was assisted by senior officials from UNDP, in his briefing, informed Ambassador Narbayev about the current focus of UNDP and promised to extend all possible help for the development needs in the ECO region. Mr. Pasha also referred to the interest of UNDP in the development of reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.

Receiving Ambassador Narbayev, the Under Secretary General of United Nations for Economic Affairs H. E Mr. Jose Antonio Ocampo, welcomed him to the United Nations. Ambassador Narbayev briefed the Under Secretary General about development needs of ECO, in particular Afghanistan and Central Asian members of ECO. Mr. Ocampo thanked Ambassador Narbayev for his briefing and assured him that he will request his colleague in United Nations Economic and Social Commission in Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP) to support ECO in this regard.
