ECO Secretary General meets the Afghan Foreign Minister

            His Excellency Seyed Mojtaba Arastou, ECO Secretary General met with Dr. Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic State of Afghanistan. In this meeting, ECO Secretary General provided the Afghan Minister with a report on the ongoing activities of the organization after the 7th ECO Summit Meeting in Istanbul, particularly the follow up of the implementation of the decisions of the said meeting on the subject of the reconstruction of Afghanistan. Mr. Arastou mentioned that ECO Member States are all in favour of the plan for the reconstruction of Afghanistan and they would like to actively participate in this plan. He attached a great importance to prioritizing the activities required for reconstruction of Afghanistan and added that ECO is following up a Seminar on this subject, one of the most important aims of which is to establish an ECO fund for reconstruction of Afghanistan.

 

          Dr. Abdullah in return while appreciating the support made by the Heads of ECO Member States and thanking ECO Secretariat Secretary General for his comprehensive report, said that Afghanistan in its reconstruction process requires the bilateral and International assistance of the ECO Member States and added that with a great support provided to this issue, it is necessary that through a well devised plan, the matter be considered at the ECO Secretariat thoroughly. Dr. Abdullah also formally invited Eco Secretary General to pay a visit to Kabul in order to find ways and means of cooperation and as well to have negotiations with different Ministries in order to finalize the primary studies of several projects in various fields, so that from the feasibility study budget of ECO and after the approval of the Member States, these projects would be duly conducted.

 

          It is necessary to mention hat Economic Cooperation Organization intends to establish a fund for reconstruction of Afghanistan and accumulates the financial contribution for this purpose, in line with the decisions made in the 7th ECO Summit Meeting.
