ECO Secretary General Calls on the Iranian Minister of Oil | |

H.E. Ambassador Seyed Mojtaba Arastou, ECO Secretary General, has met with H.E. Mr. Bijan Zanganeh, the Minister of Petroleum of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In this meeting, Mr. Arastou referred to the fact that energy is among the priority fields of activity of ECO and added that in the 7th ECO Summit Meeting held on October 14, 2002 in Istanbul the Heads of ECO Member States emphasized the importance of energy as significant field of cooperation and underlined the importance of the Second ECO Ministerial Meeting on Energy/Petroleum due to be held in Tehran.
H.E. Arastou appreciated the hosting provided by Iran for this high level meeting and referred to the First ECO Ministerial Meeting on Energy/Petroleum held in Islamabad in 2000 and stressed on the “Plan of Action for Energy/Petroleum Cooperation in the ECO Region (2001-2005)” adopted at that meeting. He hoped that the agenda going to be finalized for the Second Ministerial Meeting, ECO Member States would come up with new practical agreements in the field of energy.
H.E. Mr. Zanganeh, in response, also attached great importance to the issue of energy in the ECO Region and added that Iran already has established bilateral ties in the field of energy with the ECO Member States and so in the Tehran Ministerial Meeting efforts should be made to devise practical projects/programs that would cover all the ECO member countries. He emphasized that the energy is one of the strategic fields of cooperation in the region and pointed out that the other sources of energy other than oil shall also be covered in particular, expansion of cooperation in the field of power stations and linking the electricity networks of the Member States as well as other fields of economic expansion and cooperation. It is worth mentioning that the Second ECO Ministerial Meeting on Energy/Petroleum is to be held on 19-20 January 2003 in Tehran.
