ECO Secretary General calls on President of Turkey before the 7th ECO Summit

            H. E. Seyed Mojtaba Arastou, ECO Secretary General, called on H. E. Mr. Ahmet Nejdet Sezer, the President of the Republic of Turkey before the up coming ECO Summit and Council of Ministers Meetings in mid October.

 

            In this meeting the Turkish President stressing that Turkey is fully committed to the objectives of ECO and will continue to do her part in furthering the cooperation, underlined the importance of transport sector and said that it is the proper time that ECO Transport Ministers are holding their 4th Meeting in Izmir to take steps for removal of obstacles in the area of transport and communication.  President Sezer also emphasized on trade promotion and added that the forthcoming Summit will constitute a good opportunity to develop trade relations within the context of multilateral trading system of WTO, to have a transparent and rule-based intra regional trade. He also thanked ECO Secretary General and his staff taking necessary measures to hold the 7th Summit and 12th COM at the highest possible level.

 

            In return, Mr. Arastou briefed the President on the ECO activities and emphasized that the 7th Summit to be held in Istanbul has 3 main topics.  First, the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of ECO’s expansion from 3 to 10 member-organization which can be called “the 1st Decade of Progress;” Second, Reconstruction of Afghanistan, and Third, ECO Business Forum organized to be held on the sidelines of the Summit for the first time.  The outcome of the Business Forum can provide a direction for trade development among the Member States.  ECO Secretary General also highlighted the achievements and activities realized with international organizations, particularly with UNDP, IDB, UNDCP, FAO, UNESCAP, ITC, WTO and ASEAN
