ECO Secretary General courtesy call on Iranian First Vice President |

Press Release H. E. Mr. Seyed Mojtaba Arastou, ECO Secretary General, called on H. E. Dr. Aref, The Iranian First Vice President. In this meeting, Mr. Arastou appreciating the all aspect support of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, presented a brief report on the ongoing activities of the Secretariat, as well as the future plans to be considered. He stated that one of the important issues under consideration is the facilitation of information exchange and development of a Data Bank at the Secretariat. He added that the ECO Computer Net-work would be expanded to include Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ECO related Focal Points as well as Embassies. ECO Secretary General referring to the main areas of activity of the Organization, stressed that promotion of intra-trade, facilitation of transportation and transit of goods in the region are among the priorities of the Organization and hoped that in the next meeting of the ECO Senior Officials to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, important measures will be taken in order to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers. Mr. Arastou also referred to the ECO Business Forum to be held in Istanbul-Turkey with the assistance of ITC, on the sideline of the Summit Meeting will proved to be a crucial opportunity to promote the trade among the private sectors of the Member States. He stated that the most important obstacle on the way of cooperation in the field of Transportation, are the visa and transit fees and ECO experts are considering ways and means to ratify these problems. Dr. Aref, appreciating the ongoing activities and the comprehensive report provided by Mr. Arastou, wished him success during his tenure of duties. Dr. Aref mentioned that in today’s world there is a close competition among the International-Regional Organizations, and hoped that ECO in this scene would get position it deserves. Referring to the foreign pressures to hinder the bilateral cooperation of the Member States, he stated that regional cooperation, and specially ECO, could be a proper measure to ease these pressures. Dr. Aref emphasized on the successful foreign policy of Iran to build confidence in the international and regional scale, and asked for the same efforts on the side of the ECO Member States, so the economic prosperity in the region would be achieved in the framework of ECO. Dr. Aref stating the variety of fields of cooperation in ECO, stressed on the cooperation in the fields of Trade and Transportation. He added that Iran is ready to support the Organization in all the aspects, specially these two fields. Dr. Aref also asked for promoting ECO College of Insurance, as a matter of quality as well as attracting more students from ECO Member States.
