The ECO Workshop on Food Security and Agricultural cooperation ın the ECO Region

            The ECO Workshop on Food Security and Agricultural cooperation ın the ECO Region was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Turkey from 29-30 May 2002 in Istanbul, Turkey. The objective of the said workshop was to elaborate the possıble areas for ECO cooperation to eradıcate hunger and poverty wıthın the regıon and to explore possible areas for future cooperatıon and to contribute to the development of the agricultural sector in the economies of the ECO Member States. It has been structured around discussions and exchanges of views and experiences among participants supported by presentations on national experiences and contributions from international experts. The Workshop was attended by the participants from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

            Based on the invitation of the ECO Secretariat, the representatives of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) also participated in the workshop and presented cases on intra-regional cooperation on agriculture in the ECO region.

            The meeting was expected to provide an opportunity for participants to establish contacts and improve their awareness of the availability of advice and assistance.

            The workshop has also constituted an important step for the forthcoming first ECO Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture, to be held on 23-25 July 2002, in Islamabad , Pakistan.

            At the conclusion of the workshop, a set of recommendations was approved for the consideration of the proceeding ECO meetings. The delegates have also declared their wish for the ECO Secretariat to continue working out the subject and organizing such activities in the future.
