First Workshop on ECO Regional Power Trade Strategies

            Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) with financial collaboration of Islamic Development Bank convened its First Workshop on “Power Trade Strategies” in Tehran on 24-25 April 2002.

 

            Participants from seven Member States of ECO, namely, Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Republic of Tajikistan attended this Workshop held at the ECO Secretariat.

 

            The Workshop was inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Hojjat, Deputy Minister of Power and Managing Director of TAVANIR.

 

            ECO Secretary General Dr. Abdolrahim Gavahi’s Message to the event was delivered by his Deputy Dr. Shamil Aleskerov.

 

            In his message, Dr. Gavahi welcomed the idea of formulating a framework for power trading issues between ECO Member States and in the meantime announced that the preparation of a Feasibility Study on Interconnection of ECO Countries’ Power Systems with the financial assistance of IDB was underway and when completed could pave a way for execution of the project of interconnecting certain power grids of ECO Member States.

 

            Member States’ delegates present in the Workshop briefed the participants with their country report on the subject matter. 

 

            The delegates of Member countries also presented their viewpoints on interconnecting power grids in ECO region and their deliberations were discussed in length in the meeting.

 

            Speakers from academic circles of the Islamic Republic of Iran also attended the Workshop and shared their experience and research work with the participants at the Workshop.

 

            The Workshop’s findings will be used to promote further work which is necessary for progress towards executing of proper interconnection of Power Grids of Member States as well as set the basis for power trading among them.
