Message of

H.E. Mr. Pervez Musharraf

President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

on the occasion of ECO Day

(November 28, 2004)

On the auspicious occasion of the 12th ECO Day, I would like to convey most cordial felicitations to the ECO community. It is gratifying that we are moving steadily towards the goals and objectives that we have set for our organization.

As a founding member, Pakistan remains committed to the principles of the ECO Charter. It represents our collective resolve for the economic development of the region and the betterment of the living conditions of our peoples. An important milestone in that direction is the ECO Trade Agreement (ECOTA) signed in Islamabad last year. Its early implementation would doubtless accelerate intra-regional trade and economic activities.

ECO is developing institutional linkages with important regional organizations. It is also in step with the international community in the fight against terrorism. At the 8th ECO Summit in Dushanbe (September 2004) member states expressed their resolve to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

We rejoice at the progress of the past twelve years. However, we have yet to go a long way to realize, in full, economic integration and prosperity in the ECO region. This is a goal worth pursuing with single-minded determination.

Availing myself of this opportunity, I would like to reiterate Pakistan’s continued commitment to work closely with fellow member states to further strengthen ECO as a regional organization. Together shall we pursue its objectives and together realize them to the best advantage of our peoples.
