  ECO Cultural Institute (ECI)

Breif Introduction of ECI

Recognizing the importance of ECO cultural heritage and its impact on enrichment and development of cooperation in all aspects in the region, the Member States of ECO decided to revive the former RCD Cultural Institute under the name of ECO Cultural Institute during the third ECO Summit Meeting held in Islamabad in March 1995.  The headquarters of the Institute are located in Tehran.  A President heads the Institute. The management of the affairs of the Institute vests in an Executive Director who shall be assisted by Cultural Experts in different fields from the nationals of the Member States.

It is the only functional entity amongst the ECO Specialized Agencies. Its Charter is ratified by Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Tajikistan. Revision & updating the Basic Document has been finalized and Institute is governed by the approved Rules of Procedure, Staff & Financial Regulations. Its 2nd Board of Trustees meeting was held in Tehran in January 2000 approved the official Seal and Emblem of the Institute.

It has carried out translation of 42 children storybooks with the cooperation of UNESCO. It has also circulated its “Long Term Plan” for views of the Member States. The plan is likely to take effect from the year 2003.

ECO Culture Institute is fully functional and carrying out its responsibilities. It is time to convene the 3rd meeting of its Board of Trustees to take decision on some important pending matters like the election of its President.

  ECO Science Foundation

All the ECO Member States signed the Charter of the ECO Science Foundation during the third ECO Summit held in Islamabad in March 1995.  The Science Foundation shall serve for building up a reservoir of highly skilled, scientific and technical manpower and strengthening the scientific and research institutions in the Member States of ECO.  The Foundation has a Board of Trustees and a Board of Governors to direct and conduct the general management.  The Chairman of the Board of Governors shall serve as the Chairman of the Foundation.

The headquarters of the Foundation are to be located in Islamabad. The Charter of the ECO Science Foundation has been ratified by Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Republic of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Pakistan is going to  host the 1st meeting of its Board of Trustees of ECO Science Foundation in September 2004  after finalizing the basic document of the Foundation.

  ECO Educational Institute

During the 5th ECO Summit and the 8th COM Meeting held in Almaty  (Kazakhstan) in May 1998, all the ECO Member States except Uzbekistan signed the Charter of the ECO Educational Institute with the aim to broaden and enlarge the scope of cooperation among ECO countries in the field of education and training along the principles, aims and the spirit of the Treaty of Izmir.

The proposed educational institute shall have a President, Academic Council and an Executive Committee.  The Institute shall have its headquarters in Ankara and have a focal point in each Member State to facilitate implementation of the approved programmes.

Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic,  Republic of Tajikistan have ratified it. The noble aim of broadening and enlarging the scope of cooperation among ECO countries in the field of education and training has yet to see the day light of implementation.
